Labour / Tory Party meltdown Referendum fallout

I don't imagine an Autumn general election as has been mooted
It's not in labour or Conservative party interests as neither will be anywhere near ready to fight an election in the autumn
Good call farage as pm conducting the Brexit would be the likely outcome of an autumn election
Never going to risk that

Without a doubt, the centralist politicians have lost the country right now and have a huge fight on to regain it and a new breed of politics and politician is going to be need to do it.

They can no longer ignore the electorate and perceived issues no matter how much they want to.

I still think they will keep ignoring Joe public and carry on feathering their own nest, it's not as though there'll be a referendum every other week, we are just the electorate !

The point is I don't think they have a natural home anymore, I don't think a lot of us do

We dont mate and ive said so this morning and Prestwich Blue has just alluded to it.

Its going to take a new breed of politics and politician going forward and a party that can re take the middle ground from the far left and right and it remains to be seen if we will get it.

Out of the EU though we can fully hold them to account and they cant hide behind Brussels blaming them.

I believe we will see a new political party emerge over the coming months and years that will attempt to regain the middle ground.

Benn is the absolute stand out candidate for the leaders role and is on Marr now making the exact right noises.

The labour party has to listen to the 52% and work for them as well.

If the lib dems hadn't committed political suicide by jumping into bed with the tories they would've been superbly placed to win an election right now
Not really as they refuse to accept the Referendum result so they will never be trusted
They still think they can igmore the will of the people that is real arrogance

They're all going to stumble on, in fighting and then two new leaders who don't have the confidence of their party or the electorate. The public will be stood in the polls scratching their heads. We need new parties, a new voting system and a new way of governing ourselves. We will get none of these.

Is this a dilemma for Andy Burnham? He has his eyes set on the Mayor of Greater Manchester - I suspect that he will now be thinking he can lead the Labour Party instead

He has lost the nomination for mayor nd knows it nearly all the labour branches have voted for Lloyd. If any of the other 3 from last time put themselves forward for leader they will lose I expect

IDS struggling to confirm that NHS will be £350M per week better off (in spite of being shown a pre-election Brexit poster)!

Here's a question, ignoring the independence issue. How many English voters would vote for the SNP based purely on policies. They hare the most pragmatic of all the parties and have managed to be business friendly, while still appealing to ordinary people on social issues like healthcare. If you like Blairs third way without the international intervention side.
It's probably were the Liberals should be positioning themselves, they have been deadly quiet, now must be the time for a big relaunch appealing to centrist politicians from all sides.

Sadly its difficult to disagree with you.

If Boris Johnson looked downbeat yesterday, that is because he realises that he has lost.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.........

Mod note. Please post a link and dont just copy and paste full articles.

Thanks.

Seriously? They lost (near enough) half their seats last year. Not sure how you get them going from 57 to somewhere over 300, even with the massive (sniff!) disaffection with the two main parties on this issue.

IDS on Andrew Marr - talk about back tracking. How can he sit there and lie about the lies he's told. He's spent the £380m a week saved by leaving - 3 times. He's giving it to the NHS, he's still giving EU funding to the regions and he wants to stay in the single market - which like Norway we will need to pay for. I don't think financing and budgeting is his thing.

he is just stating the obvious there, I could have said it and it would still be true, also Corbyn said it yesterday in his speach so don't see what he is doing to be looked at as a leader, but then I could say the same about jeremy.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.

With one fell swoop yesterday at 9:15 am, Cameron effectively annulled the referendum result, and simultaneously destroyed the political careers of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and leading Brexiters who cost him so much anguish, not to mention his premiership.

How?

Throughout the campaign, Cameron had repeatedly said that a vote for leave would lead to triggering Article 50 straight away. Whether implicitly or explicitly, the image was clear: he would be giving that notice under Article 50 the morning after a vote to leave. Whether that was scaremongering or not is a bit moot now but, in the midst of the sentimental nautical references of his speech yesterday, he quietly abandoned that position and handed the responsibility over to his successor.

So Cameron has wasted a lot of time and money, off to the Tower me thinks !

May be worth remembering who triggers a general election. The PM holds that power and from time to time PMs threaten their cabinet that they will call one if they can't get their own way. If Cameron really wants to stitch Boris up he could be threatening one behind the scenes to influence the choice of leader. Dirty tricks but this is Westminster.
