Last Film You Saw

A really silly thing to do as I had to be up for 6:30 for work but late last night and for the umpteeth time I treated myself to "Independence Day". As a rule; I hate sci- fi and I hate so called "Blockbusters" but I always somehow find time for this movie.

I love the bit with Jeff Goldblum and the can of Coke and Bill Pullman's epic "Henry V" speech. Great movie.
"Epic"?

"Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

As corny as a field of ripe corn. The film as a whole isn't too bad though.

Saw Forrest Gump for the first time last night. To be honest I don't understand why people love it. Hanks is excellent as he plays a deluded fantasist bullshitting to people at the bus stop but that's the problem. It's just all so unbelievable that what could have been a sad ending elicits no real emotion from the viewer.

Where did I put that 'not sure if serious' meme?

You're telling me that someone who did all he claimed to with all the media coverage he claims he got (prime time TV chat shows, TV ads, magazine covers etc) could sit on a bench and not one of a succession of people recognised his name or face? He'd have been massively famous.

I used to know a guy who would make little claims to fame like Gump did with inventing Elvis' dance and personally witnessing Watergate. Some people are just born bullshitters. Whether that's through innocent delusion or something more sinister is up to the viewer I suppose.

You do realise it was a film and not a documentary. Next you'll be telling me you don't believe in Ewoks.

At last,Someone else who thinks that the character is a Walter Mitty type,it's a great film and open to personal perception I suppose, but for me Gump is a simple fantasist,Tom Hanks plays the part superbly!

Exactly. Problem is it goes too far so as to become utterly unbelievable. I was half expecting him to claim he was the first man on the moon.

As for the comment someone made about Star Wars, well that's a fantasy. I don't like Star Wars but you know where you stand with it and judge the characters accordingly and within those boundaries. Forrest Gump is I assume supposed to be a believable character who did all those things. Unless the whole point is like I thought, that he was a fantasist who didn't actually do any of it but was a decent story teller.
