Too many WTF moments like the end with the divers... Not sure about you but I always go to the barren snowy landscapes in full diving gear by helicopter
Better than I thought it might be, but generally too long. Bale's double act is decent, I felt his compassion was just about real enough. Paul Dano sells his big scene beautifully. All he has to do is employ the mannerisms of middle aged women, and you're all losing your mind. Car chase could have been better. I didn't like Jeffrey Wright, almost Hugo Weaving levels of portentious scenery chewing going on there. Not fussed about Gollum man either. He was alreet, but it's a sell for him to be a butler.
It was pretty handsomely shot tho, and I felt the story held together enough to make the beats towards the end count. Even if it failed the 'show, don't tell' test at the big moment... I'll just about give it that, 'everyone needs to feel someone is looking out for them' is a strong enough message to warrant a voiceover. However, I simply can't fake enough nonplussedness towards the mindlessly dull treatment of the moments where
catgirl and batperson save each other from certain death, especially as they came so close together.
CLOSE.
Last year’s Grand Prize winner at Cannes, and an Oscar® nominee for Best International Film. This Belgian film (French and Flemish, English subtitles) is directed by Lukas Dhont.
Close features Edin Dambrine as Léo and Gustav De Waele as Rémi, two 13-year-old boys whose very close friendship draws comments from other pupils when they start high school. “Are you a couple?” and one of the boys reacts by breaking up the friendship.
Interesting coming-of-age film. NB some reviews reveal a major plot shift.
I really enjoyed it but I don't agree that it was 'Best Picture' level good.
Might be controversial but I think the push for it to win best picture is evidence that the new generation of moviegoers would actually much rather watch a big blockbuster than something like The Whale (which is understandable). To avoid admitting this, they go after 'artsy blockbusters' like EEAAO, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar 2.
Jamie Lee Curtis winning Best Supporting Actress is an absolute joke though. Not even the best nominee from that film, by a long shot.
Falls into the category of films where I can appreciate the craftmanship behind them but would rather just watch a sitcom or something interesting on YouTube than actually sit through them.

Ye agree with that, had to laugh this morning they said Michelle Yeoh was the second woman of colour to win! What colour would that be then? She’s the first Asian to win but they love to push a narrative. I think since they opened it up to 10 nominations the big blockbusters are getting in now, Maverick won fir sound Avatar for visuals etc but it’s only the niche films that win the other categories, unless it’s Tom Hanks. If they let the public vote then I’d guarantee Tom Cruise would’ve been up there last night.

I just couldn’t accept the Multiverse premise behind EE in the context of a visit to a tax office but I do know some really enjoyed this film…but no way on Earth was Jamie Lee Curtis her best supporting actress her character was pretty limited and her acting nothing special at all.
