So, for a while I bypassed "Silent Night" cos it just seemed like one of those silly Christmas films... and I can understand why people do bypass this film, but I was bored. City had won and Scum had lost and so my year had rounded off very nicely and I thought 'why not?' to watching it as I expected nought!
However, I was extremely surprised and the creators could have titled this film differently as it belongs outside of the realms of Christmas slash 'em ups, so don't be fooled by the title.
Joel Kinnaman (not an actor you'd expect to carry a lead) is, actually, very good because he doesn't have much to say!
This film has MANY influences ranging from 'Man on Fire' to 'Batman' to 'Die Hard', however (and this is important) at the driving heart of it is something tangible that is different and many of us can relate to. Whilst the action needs to happen (yes, suspend the belief for a little bit!) it's, somewhat, grounded and makes the film all the more better for it. There are some silly things that happen in this film, but I do set them aside and it evens out how the film ends.
Shockingly, this film has heart and so is one of my favourite films of the year!
As a side note, I've seen this film get low scores (which was quite similar to "Man on Fire" when it came out, so not completely surprised) but I believe this may have a future cult following in the future.
