Looper and Arrival might be up his street based on the 2 he liked. Maybe Alien and Aliens might be worth watching before Promethus. Gravity,the fifth element and the Martian are a few other set in space off top of head

He enjoyed Promethus last night - a film that recieved tepid feedback at the time (one of those that didn't live up to the trailer) but I think it's matured over the years since it was made.

He loved Arrival btw (as did I).
Villeneuve has to be one of the pre-eminent Sci fi film makers of this generation.

Wild card perhaps, but the original Solaris (and remake with Clooney) might be worth a shot too.
2001 too....that film still glows.
