Really no focus was on anything else in that film, except for his portrayal of turmoil.

The film itself? Meh.

Shannon plays the arc to the character though, it's all a little too transparent (IMO)

I think Gyllenhall is outstanding in pretty much everything he's been in the last few years so expectations were met in that regard!
