League Cup Newcastle '76

Went with Grandad. Think we walked up the north end of Platt Park to get on Finglands coach(?). Had seat down near front, so not greatest view, but didn’t matter. Couldn’t get ticket for Spurs Final, but went down for replay. We must have switched ends for the replay, as I found a Spurs scarf in the City end...unless it was someone who realized where he was and thought better of it and dropped it. I remember I wrapped it around my waist under my shirt and brought it home as a souvenir. I believe it got burned within days of getting back to Manchester!

Spurs fans in our end at both games. You must have been well protected. ;)

Does anyone know why we wore grey Adidas trackie tops on the day, even though our kit was umbro?.

I always wondered that and thought that maybe things weren't so stringent then but I think Umbro and Adidas had an agreement where they 'helped' each other, may have even had some sort of partnership so perhaps that was a bit of advertising for them

Think it was £1.50 to stand although that could have been the 81 replay price.

I think you could be correct. I kept all my Wembley tickets & just checked but they only go back to 1981 (must have lost 69,70 & 74 in house moves over the years). The 81 Final was £3.50 for the Saturday game & £2.50 for the replay. £1.50 for the 1976 League Cup Final therefore sounds about right.
It was a bloody good day out though !

Great day , 1st trip to Wembley as a 14 year old , didn’t end too well though as I got attacked by a load of big hard rag blokes on the way home & ended the night in Manchester Royal.

My first trip to Wembley on a Godfrey Abbott coach. After the game I was on my own negotiating the labyrinth of coaches in the coach-park trying to find mine and walked smack into a group of Newcastle fans. They grabbed each end of my scarf and started pulling in opposite directions nearly strangling me. Managed to wriggle my way out and snatch my scarf back but not a pleasant experience.

Quaint Geordie custom, it's how they show they like you.
I met a load of them outside Wembley after the match, had gone on my own so was just walking down the road not singing or anything, and they gave me abuse for not celebrating City's win.

Went on a hired coach from the aircraft factory at Woodford, 49 seater, 48 blues and one Geordie! He got some stick on the way home, I was 21 and he's still my good mate today, had a beer with him last time I came to Manchester in February.

Was too young to go to the 76 final but remember the overhead kick very well. I did to the 81 replay which was a fucking great game when you watch it back. How many did we have at that replay? Obviously more spurs there because if only a few days notice.

I always remember when leaving Wembley on the way back going by a coach with one Toon bloke on it.....funny how some stuff sticks with you for 40 odd years yet I couldn't tell you what I had for tea three days ago.

i was 8 coming out of wembley in 1974 we were odds on favourites to beat Wolves with a far superior line up but thanks to John Richards i was crying i took it bad my grandpa put his arm round me and said "dont worry soon we will be here next year then you will feel how winning feels like Well it took us two but he was right 1976 was my biggest thrill as a young blue and as we had a second bit of luck my dad won £200 a lot of money then playing cards on the Pulman on the way home
