Wasn't Lee Mason the referee from Gtr Manchester that disallowed the perfectly good Sturridge (?) goal against us in December.

Maybe not so bad eh?

No, firstly it wasn't a disallowed goal, the whistle had gone and everyone else stopped playing except Sterling; secondly it was the lino who flagged, not really Mason's decision.
The referee can over-rule the linesman/assistant referee.

True, but it's unusual, hence the "not really" in my post.

When was the last time a referee over-ruled an offside decision?

Didn't the ref at Newcastle away say the goal was offside not the assistant referee? I remember the flag didn't go up until he went over to speak to the linesman.

Should we have a general Rate the Referee thread so we can see the alleged leanings of all Prem refs?

Correct.

Correct.

He didn't overrule him though. The liner said (correctly) that the player was in an offside position. The ref decided whether or not he was interfering with play. There was no doubt that Sterling was interfering with play, so the only call was whether he was offside. For any ref to overrule the liner in that situation would have been ridiculous beyond belief.

I can say with 100% confidence that if exactly the same set of circumstances had happened at the other end with a City player doing to a Hull defender what Jelavic did to Kompany & then going through to be dragged back by the Hull defender Mason would have given a foul against the City forward.

Did you see Mason's face at full time when the camera panned in on him. He looked absolutely gutted.

Odd that there are 629 million die-hard rags in the world yet not one of them has ever become a Premiership referee, at least according to their declared interests !

interesting if true. Is there a public list anywhere to show which referee supports which team.

The 629m fans isn't true. As far as referees allegiances are concerned, along with a number of other posters, I attended a referees' roadshow at the ground presented by Mike Riley.

One of the things he told us was that top flight referees have to declare their, and their family's, allegiances. They aren't allowed to referee that club. There is no list of those allegiances to my knowledge, but it follows that no ref with top flight aspirations would disqualify themselves by admitting they support a club in the Premier League. Indeed, when was the last time you heard of a ref being unable to referee a game because he supported one of the clubs involved ?

Clattenburg can't referee newcastle games.
