Leeds away Fa Cup 1977/78

Always remember a game in the seventies when big Joe Corrigan made one of the best saves i have ever seen. The pitch that day resembled a ploughed field, think it was the F.A. cup,and we lost 1-0.

yes it was one if the best saves I have ever seen from Alan Clarke, an header joe went down to his right stopped it on the line, then Trevor cherry scored a minute later which joe totally cocked up. But that was joe save the hard ones miss the easy ones, but I remember last minute Colin viljoen centred for dennis tueart to head the ball it was in all the way then it just veared at the last second and went past the post I was gutted. I was in the side stand and it was mixed with city and Leeds it was going off everywhere.

I remember that cup game vividly as I'd gone over to meet two of my ex-flatmates from uni, one who was a Leeds fan and the other a City fan so we had tickets in the Main Stand.

I went over from Manchester with some other friends and was early so walking round to meet the other two when a special bus load of Leeds fans pulled up. I had my scarf well hidden so wasn't too bothered but forst off the bus was another of my ex-flatmates, Normally I would have been pleased to see him but i knew he's be pissed up and you never knew what would happen with him when he was so I quickly had to dodge into a doorway and hide in case he saw me.

After the pitch invasion, the police kept the City fans in but that just gave the Leeds hooligans a chance to get round to our end en masse. I was OK as I'd been in the Main Stand but had to meet the others to get back to Manchester. There were bricks and bottles being thrown into and out of the ground so I kept my scarf well-hidden and hung around trying to look casual. Then they let the City fans out and they charged the Leeds fans who scattered but I stayed where I was. Then I realised there was a huge mob of City fans racing towards me and they thought I was a Leeds fans so I had to quickly whip my scarf out from round my waste and wave it at them so i didn't get battered.

It's probably my most memorable away day of the 70s at 13 years old I'd got a good kick in at Old Trafford the year before and had my nose broke so a year on I stupidly chose Leeds away in the Cup as my first step back into away games, and I remember being tightly packed in with my eyes at pitch level ( the away end was below pitch level) and when I saw the Leeds fans invade the pitch and head for the City end my heart sank as I knew I couldn't move, Then the police on horseback entered the arena and all hell broke loose.

The game itself for me will always hold in the memory the amazing performance of King Colin, even with a limp he ran the game, I have the highlights on dvd, as many do, but would love to be able to re-live the whole game again

my 2nd away game with my mates, only a kid, fieldsends coaches from the height in salford, anyone remember fieldsends? took coaches to all city away 70s 80s,joes great save.gary owen trying to cool down an irate city fan,the cool cats in there pomp, the young city kid on the pitch when we scored, leeds were bleedin mental, city in the lowfields rd and behind the goal, getting bricked big time as we came out, horses on the pitch,2 scarves round both wrists, cherry red docs with my best flares on,haircut like leo sayer,ah i remember it like yesterday.

Ah ... Leeds ... the memories. Remember around this time having our van burnt out. That was a laugh. Walked round the corner to see what was left of our van as it kicked off everywhere fucking properly. This might have been the night I spent in Leeds General. Also around this time we`d got the train over there (didn`t want to get a 2nd van burnt out), we`d decided to go to Wigan Casino later on that night. I was bemoaning the fact that, as a regular at punk gigs, I wasn`t dressed for the occasion (you had to be there!). Got off at Leeds, it kicks off straight away. Next, amongst lads knocking lumps out of each other, my mate Barney appears from the middle of all this with a full length leather coat (well trendy around this time at Wigan). Bearing in mind it`s utter fucking carnage all around, says "He looked about your size - got you a present". Chucks it at me, grins, turns round and steams back in. Proper funny. So many memories of Leeds though. In all seriousness though Leeds was a really bad place to go to in the 70`s & 80`s.

I was there and we had a huge following, i remember the pitch invasion and one city fan jumping over the fence and running into the Leeds fans on the pitch. Madness outside the air was thick with bricks and bottles. Great result but a dodgy return to the coaches with fighting breaking out everywhere.

I went to the train and getting back to the station even with the escort of the cops was frightening.

hehe ..

you should have tried it the season when Willie Donachie scored a last gasp equaliser for us there in a 2-2 draw ...

we then exited the South Stand and had to run the gauntlet back to the station WITHOUT a police escort ... and it seemed like the vast majority of West Yorkshires finest hooligan scum accompanied us on the 3 miles journey!

In the early seasons of the 1970's the cops there just didn't want to know , and they actually blamed you for going if you turned to them for help!

Willie's hard low cross that ended up in the far corner of the net! That was my first trip to Leeds - luckily I went by coach, I wouldn't have fancied the jaunt back to the station with no escort, it was bad enough with one.

Didn't he twist in mid-air and go from left to right...and then he later woman-slapped a Leeds fan who dared confront him??

That's the one!

He almost got the special train crew killed with that equaliser of his ... two bottles just missed my head by inches near the station , they bricked us from the roadside a few hundred yards from the ground .... there was thousands of em' attacking everyone they could see in sky blue .... and the cops were non-existent!

When i finally got back on the train there weren't many who hadn't suffered an injury of some sort.
