For fuk sake... Bilbao doesn't give a shit whether you think you are a big club or not. They always try to keep their players. This feels the same as Laporte. Bringing in Pep didn't elevate our prestige as a club to the big boys. 100% if Barcelona or Bayern went full throttle for Laporte, Bilbao would have rolled out the red carpet and he'd be a Barca player right now.
It really hurts us that we're competing against the big clubs but don't have the pull. The worst thing is that at this level, only a few players at each position will actually improve us. So if we miss out on a sure thing, we're stuck taking gambles on lesser players that almost never work out as well as our original blue chip target, who end up at the mega clubs.
Why would Sane even consider staying in that one-club league? It doesn't even make sense unless he's planning on joining Munich.

But at the end Javi Martinez went to Bayern and Herrera went to United.
We were willing to meet his Buy-out Clause, just as Bayern and United did for those two. It wasn't Athletic Bilbao that rejected us, it was Laporte.
Out of interest why do you think he turned us down ?
This is irrelevant. Players leave. It has nothing to do with Bilbao bowing to "big clubs." The players just chose too. Had Laporte made a similar choice he'd have left too. He didn't. So he stayed. But at the end Javi Martinez went to Bayern and Herrera went to United.
