Libya (Merged)

Re: Looks like as from 10pm we are at war

this could easy go to shit in a hurry, we loose an aircraft over libya, the pilot gets captured and tortured, ends up on world television. do we think our armed forces would stand by and let that happen? no, the next thing we know is that we are sending land forces in and we have another iraq like situation.

also gaddafi is supposed to have basic forms of chemical weapons like mustard and chlorine gas which surely he would use in an attempt to hold on to power.

haha yep, like with saddam we knew he had chemical weapons because we fucking gave them to him when he was in our good lads club in the late 70's early 80's.

The vast majority of Libyan military equipment is old Eastern Bloc stuff. They do have some 'Western' kit, but not much.

If he has them & uses them then it will be his people that suffer. Our roces can perate in that sort of environment with no real problems.

Looks like as from 10pm we are at war

Don't like it.
All this will do is prolong the problem. If we are going to take a side then do it and do it properly. We could finish this in a month by bluffing the Army into surrender but an enhanced no fly zone only protects the status quo.

We should have intervened 15 years ago instead of appeasing the terrorist fuck. Now having made our bed we should lay in it.

P.s. Yes we did have a no fly zone over the Balkans, I did about 500 hours tanking over the adriatic in support. You don't need carriers and the harrier is not the right asset for the task. I imagine Sicily, Crete and Malta would be reasonable places to base your assets which will include E3, tanker various depending on what's serviceable and Typhoon.

Were an almost bankrupt country, our involvement in Iraq and Afganistan was a total cock up, im sick of us getting involved in countries diplomacy only because they have Oil

stay clear for once Britain please !
As much as you may not like it, what happens in Libya could have a very direct impact on your life in Britain. It sits on a shitload of oil that we unfortunately need and acts as a gateway into Europe for illegal immigration. In this particular case, we are absolutely right to get involved, and Scall is right, it's about two weeks too late.

If we need oil we should buy it. We should not install/prop up dictators who will give corporations good deals/allow them to control it.

Re: Looks like as from 10pm we are at war

I don't like the idea of our involvement purely on the grounds that I think we are overstretched as it is, but lets be straight here. There is a very menacing threat of a humanitarian crisis here. Gadaffi is clearly mental, his sons are clearly willing to back him as they will inherit the country (ala the Husseins of Iraq) and they have shown willingness to do whatever it takes to cling to power. The UN have a duty to act to prevent another Srebreniza/Rwanda/Halabja etc. History is littered with our shame when the free and right thinking world turned a blind eye. But I've no doubt some will not be swayed from their belief that its "all about the oil".

-- Fri Mar 18, 2011 7:37 am --

Brilliant post sir.

When are you signing up. I'll come with you.

Are you bringing your children with you to sign up?

No? Oh.

So it'll be somebody elses kids fighting and dying then?

Brilliant.

Why don't we go after the REAL bastards that are causing death and robbery and genocide in the Arab/muslin/ middle eastern world - isreal.

Now that I'd vote for, but only if I could go myself. I'm no chicken-hawk, expecting somebody else to fight my wars for me.

You should be ashamed
Why bring Israel into this ?

Re: Looks like as from 10pm we are at war

A no fly zone isn't technically at war but yeah it's a big step in that direction. I think the UN is completely useless in everything that they do especially in matters such as this, seeing as how Libyan rebels have been calling out for this for weeks now. I think that really the only thing to do in this situation is pick a side and stick with it. Either stay out completely or step in on the side of the rebels and try to get an end to this thing quickly. No matter what Quaddafi says he simply couldn't hold out very long from the rebels backed completely by the world powers, but it's not really something I think anyone wants to get that deeply involved with.

Then again, calling for tougher sanctions or whatever isn't going to stop anything. The whole "Hey Mr. so and so, leader of nation this and that, please stop your aggressive military policies towards your people/other nations or we will be forced to write you a very angry letter" thing has been tried and tested in the past and isn't going to solve anything.

Glad I'm not the one making the call on this.

There was a no fly zone in Bosnia, I don't know much about that though. I don't know if the massacres that took place happened before or after the no fly zone was implemented or how effective it was overall.
