The Daily Mail article reads as though the ban applies only to signings, and not the selling of players as well. Surely they can't ban player sales as that would be a restriction on that individuals ability to work, through no fault of their own, whereas signings punishes the club as intended ?

If so, this could be the ideal time to sign Messi, as Barca could hide behind the excuse of wanting to reinvest into their squad the transfer fee received, but are unable to do so due to the ban. Instead they trouser the fee which handily can be used towards the cost of the redevelopments they are planning.
Unfortunately, the ban could put Messi in a bad light as he would surely be seen as leaving them in the shit with no replacement options, should he decide to leave.

Why would Barca let Messi go when they are unable to replace him until 2015?

According to Talkshite, FIFA have said it is a ban on ALL trading, not just buying.

Our only hope is that they put an appeal in within the 90 days given, and therefore the ban doesn't come into effect till after the summer window has been completed.

Also, Chelsea' ban was only avoided after they came to a settlement with the complaining club, whereas in this case FIFA have brought the case, so they shouldnt really have a leg to stand on

Im sure FIFA would accept a "settlement fee" from Barca
