Manchester City have denied making an attempt to sign Barcelona's Argentina star Lionel Messi.

Reports in Spain today claimed City had offered an extraordinary £132 million deal to buy out the remainder of the 21-year-old's contract with Barça, and then pay him just under £9m a year to play at Eastlands.

But, a day after the City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak insisted the club would not overreach in the transfer market this summer, the club issued a statement denying any such approach had been made.

"Manchester City Football Club note with interest the reports circulating in the Spanish media that the club has made an offer to the Barcelona player Lionel Messi and that he has turned down the chance to join the club," the statement said.

"While acknowledging that Lionel Messi is a world-class player of the highest calibre, Manchester City would like to make it clear that the club has at no time made an approach to Mr Messi or his representatives."

Earlier this month, the City manager Mark Hughes hit out at the number of reports linking the club with players around the world since the Abu Dhabi United Group completed their takeover of the club last summer.

Dated 20th May 2009....in other news Sir Bacon tells Real he wouldn't sell them a virus.

All what i can say about this is wait and see, he has a release clause of 150m so barca would not say no.

The only problem is if he is willing to sign, but i think a blank cheque will turn anybody's head around.

And if not this year then next year, plus the club haven't made a statement saying its not true so maybe theres some truth about it.

I know this is hard for all of us to beleive, but maybe if we get champs league qualification he'll start thinking about it.

I think he does.

i know nothing but im baffelled the club haven't said anything to deny it.

And if i knew anything i would have said it sooner rather than later, but all we have to do now is wait and see what happens.

Messi question

excuse the pun,

With reports that we're after him.... i'm not sure we need messi or another striker for that matter. 150m .... thats a bit too much.

With our current squad, If i were to choose between getting a defender worth 50m or Messi for 150m, I'd be leaning towards getting the defender.

Roque hasnt even played for us yet and Tevez hasnt been 100% fit, so when everyones fit, our front line is moe than enough.

Though it'd be funny if we bought Messi this summer window, had a surplus of strikers, and kicked Santa out before he ever got a game haha.
