As others have said, it's unfathomable to think that City won't at least be exploring the possibility of signing Messi given the latest developments. I don't think it'll happen personally, but I don't believe the club aren't even entertaining the idea.
We shall see what Laporta says in this matter, think we'll know if there's a chance he's staying

Come on mate, there's no way we're not making the phone call. I know that Pep's camp and others will be saying no, I get that. But there's no way we leave a player who generated billions of Euros in his time at Barca and is the most popular player in world football ever who we have been chasing for a decade and decide we're not talking to him. That's madness. There's no way we're run that badly because he hurt our feelings.

Not saying we'll get him, but cannot believe we're not in for him. Heavily belief that City and others will brief we're not. But you know as well as I do that Messi is a once in a lifetime player and it would catapult the CFG's commercial interests into the stratosphere, especially with a New York backend. Soriano and Berrada have probably been walking round with a permanent hard on since they found out.

I think a lot of it will come down to timing, and nerve.

On the one hand, as I've said before, I doubt the news breaking yesterday was the the first Pep and the club have heard of it. I doubt it is the first time Messi has realized thats it too. Both would have known it was coming, surely. So to me it isn't some random scrabble all of a sudden where the first one to make an offer wins.

Messi may still end up at Barcelona, this may all be a bit of an act. The club may know or suspect that. Or he was never going to end up at Barcelona, and all up till now was the act. The club would also have known that. In which case he already knows where he is going. And probably so does the club.

I don't think we'd have gone as far as signing Grealish and getting to a point Kane is not showing up at Spurs to seemingly push a move through, if that decision hasn't already been made.

If we he doesn't come here, it will have been a conscious decision by the club, possibly made a while ago, and not a result of a sudden change of circumstances we failed to respond to

On the other hand, if indeed this is completely out of the blue and a shock to everyone, and the club are sitting by the phone thinking, do we call him or not. Then messi might need to have the nerve to be patient to see how the Kane issue plays out, not rush into any offers. And we would need to be patient in letting it play out. With or without Messi, still a difficult deal to pull off with a long way to go. I can't come to believe we would just abandon it to go for Messi, any more than I can believe we would completely ignore Messi's availability to get Kane over the line.

I feel it would be cruel to shelve him, making his situation poor at his club, just to sign someone who, as you say, has spurned us 3 times.
Even taking the emotion out of it, it would be a terrible decision from a PR perspective and for any potential future targets we’ll be seen as less than trustworthy. We need to follow through with Kane at this point
