Yes he’s the best but holding the club you love to ransom is very strange behaviour .

1 million euros a week plus bonus is scandalous.
He's the best player on the planet. 1 out of 7 billions. You gotta pay for that. Griezmann who's half the player he is is on €881,000 a week. De Jong on €400,000. They have a ton of expensive flops on outrageous wages.

Like I said if it was too much, just sell him.

And Messi played his part in that. Regular wage increases and demands over who to sign. What people forget is that every time he got an increase, many other players demanded and got one. That's what happened at United in 2010 when Rooney supposedly threatened to leave.

I was told that was a put-up job, probably with the connivance of Gill & Ferguson, to get the Glazers to increase the low wage ceiling they had at the time. So Rooney doubled his basic but there were about 5 other players who had the contractual right to get the same basic. And even if you were on £40k, £50k or £60k a week, instead of the £90k a week the top earners were getting, you got double. That's when their wage bill starting shooting up and that's what will have happened to Barca as well.

Messi can cry all he likes but he should shoulder some of the blame.
But what happened to the player that pays for himself with hundreds of sponsors?

The Goats are wonderful but they come with huge baggage.

Wouldn't you demand an increase in wages according to your performances? He carried them for 15 years and is their best player ever. He greatly contributed to the money they racked up during his time there. If the club felt at some point that he was demanding too much, then they should've said no and sold him.

I'm seriously baffled at this faux outrage. People are just desperate to shoot him down.
That's the problem though. Barcelona just paid whatever for whoever Messi wanted and paid Messi whatever he wanted. Of course he brought in the money but he made sure he got his full whack. Read Simon Kuper's piece in the Financial Times.

He's not solely or even mainly to blame. But he played his part in their financial troubles and seemingly never gave a second thought to the consequences of his actions. He's allegedly getting a €25m signing-on fee from PSG. Why the fuck does he need that?

What PB said isnt even true.

No one at Barcelona demanded wage increases when Messi got one. Circa 2017 he was earning €100m a year - 60m salary/40m image rights and the next closest earner was Suarez on 16m.

It was the arrival of Coutinho on €26m a year and Griezmann who was given €40m a year to match what Atletico Madrid paid him to stay 1 more year that destroyed the wage structure. Then Umtiti, Roberto, Rakitic etc. demanded a higher salary.

From 2009-2017 Messi had a contract that completely dwarfed everyone else at the club and it didn't effect the other salaries at all.
