Lionel Messi

Why hasn't he inspired Argentina to World Cup glory like Maradona did. Or Pele did for Brazil.

Messi is probably the greatest ever player at club level, but until he does what Maradona and Pele did on the world stage, the question will always be asked.

That said, I agree with people who say he's one of the best ever.

Why did Maradona never win the European Cup?

I think CL is a bigger stage than the World Cup. All the best players are in the CL, not so with the WC.

If you look at the tactics Maradona used in the last WC, it would be impossible for any player to win it for Argentina.

give him chance he's only 24, it's scary to think that he could improve.

fingers crossed he's got 10 years left playing at the top level.

for me he's the best player ever.

saviour what you're witnessing, in every generation theres a player who makes you realise how lucky you are to see them play - this nonsense about world cups, he is just 24, the lifestyle he lives he will be playing at this level (barring severe injury) until 34 at least, even if he doesn't win a world cup he will still go down as one of the true greats of the game, and for me he's now edging maradona, pele doesn't even come close.

-- Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:36 pm --

We have had threads and threads about him. I have always said Pele first, Maradona third and Messi second.

Wavering now each time I see him on the Pele first bit.

The very fact your measuring pele above maradona is why these threads need to continue

Pele was like Muhammed Ali - great but not 'the greatest' like we are made to believe. There are boxers that were better than Ali, it's just who he was and how he fought and all the media circus etc etc made him 'the greatest'.

I never saw Pele and I only remember Maradona as a cheating argie bastard. He won that world cup by cheating!! He should be judged for the great he was though, not by the fact he won a world cup. He was mesmerising though and quite rightly one of the best 3 players of all time.

Being the most successful and being the best/greatest of all time are two completely different things. Records, wins/losses, length of career, supporting cast, change in speed and fitness over generations etc. etc. There are many things to consider when comparing players and boxers and teams and so on. It is almost impossible, and purely subjective....

1.Messi
2.Maradona
3.Zidane
4.Pele
5.Beckenbauer

Atleti are a quality side. Yet he just waltzed through them like they were kids. Three times.

It is getting to the point where calling him the best of this generation won't suffice. He is for me the best ever.
