Got to be honest with everyone when I say that I believe the argument between Messi and Ronaldo is smaller than most would like to believe. Ronaldo has scored 73 goals in 68 La Liga games. An unbelievable strike record.

Regardless of what he does in a World Cup (and he still has two, maybe even three pops at that, barring injuries), he will still go down as one of the greats. Best and Weah never played in World Cups, Stanley Matthews was part of an England team that got knocked out at the group stages, and Omar Sivori made little impact on the big stage. Is Messi the best ever? At the moment no, but he's still only 24, not even reached his peak yet.

In terms of greatest players ever, Zidane would not make my top 10, maybe even 20. Not even the best French player to play in that position.

Barcelona's all-time scorer in all competitions is César Rodríguez with 235 goals, Lionel Messi is now at 195 which means if he manages to score 41 goals more this season he will become FC Barcelona's record all-time scorer at the age of 24

Leo replied: 'I just can't perform without Xavi and Iniesta.'

Sums it up perfectly for me. Will go down as one of the greats but for him to be the the best of all time he will have to leave Barcelona(Never happen imo) in a new setting and perform at the same level he is now. 10% of Leo Messi IS Barcelona and if that was taken away I don't think he'd be regarded as the best ever.

Why hasn't he inspired Argentina to World Cup glory like Maradona did. Or Pele did for Brazil.

Messi is probably the greatest ever player at club level, but until he does what Maradona and Pele did on the world stage, the question will always be asked.

That said, I agree with people who say he's one of the best ever.

saviour what you're witnessing, in every generation theres a player who makes you realise how lucky you are to see them play - this nonsense about world cups, he is just 24, the lifestyle he lives he will be playing at this level (barring severe injury) until 34 at least, even if he doesn't win a world cup he will still go down as one of the true greats of the game, and for me he's now edging maradona, pele doesn't even come close.

Do you know Ronaldo scored more goals set up by either Ozil or Di Maria, than Messi with assists from Xavi or Iniesta? Have you seen how many assists Messi gets? Finally, look at a big chunk of Messi's goals, its not like Xavi or Iniesta is crossing the ball in, and he's just tapping it home.
