tbh i've pretty much had enough of respecting this occasion. it was such a tragedy, and the whole of football changed as a result.

please, please dont keep dragging it up every year. i have people i know who died in unfortunate circumstance, shall i report it every one, five or ten years? let it go for feck sake!!!!

They keep 'dragging it up every year' because they wanted truth and justice for the ones they lost. Anyone would want that, not just in a situation like Hillsborough. In their eyes, and many other peoples, letting it go 'for feck sake', would be letting those 96 down!!!
As I've said, it's the 25th anniversary, a quarter of a century, and they have only just got access to the truth. God knows what that must be like!
Having stood on terraces as a young lad, sometimes it was almost terrifying, but i always got home. They didn't.
I for one feel lucky (not sure if that's the right word for it) that i can actually be at anfield to pay my respects.
I don't understand people against this, but that's up to them. But please try to understand that there is no time limit on grief, especially in these circumstances!

they will commemorate this next year will they?

I'm sure they'll do something... You know, out of respect!

Seriously, because of the heysel disaster, you don't think they are aloud to pay any respects to the 96 that died at Hillsborough?
Maybe in that situation you wouldn't want truth and justice for your family. Maybe you wouldn't want to show any kind of respect. Maybe you wouldn't care less. But they do, most people would, and most neutrals on that day will...
If it really upsets you that much and you're at the game, stay out of the way. Then get behind City.

Re: Liverpool away

96, say it again, 96 football fans died in horrific circumstances and were then blamed for the event.
The authorities lied, proven to lie and covered up to disguise their culpability in the deaths of those 96 and as far as I'm concerned Liverpool can mourn this every fecking week and I would support them.
It's what a decent club do for their fans and community.
A moment to think on every year is absolutely nothing compared to the loss of the families of the 96. Justice for the 96 indeed.

Re: Liverpool away

We were in Liverpool the other week at the passport office, so had a few hours to spare whilst waiting for the collection. We went to Anfield to show my son (17) the Hillsborough Memorial. I explained what had happened and had tears in my eyes as I thought of those fans that went to a game of football never to come home.
A true tragedy and the Government and Police attempted to blame the innocent. There's a reason we seem to play Liverpool around the time of the anniversary and the other lot don't, R.I.P the 96 and Justice for the 96.

Absolutely this
How anybody can want to mock or trivialise this horrific disaster is beyond me
Took my son to see the memorial when we played there in the league cup 2nd leg to explain what it was about

The difference between Bradford and hillsborough is that with Bradford the reason behind the tradegy was found pretty quickly.

There was no cover up or blame game. No newspapers saying that fans robbed the dead. No hiding that fans were pronounced dead before they actually were.

I was at Blackburn that day with City and for those who went to games those days you will remember how fans were herded into grounds, all treated like hooligans, the grounds were not the best after years of neglect. It could have been any set of fans at a really big game.

It also shows that people will just not give up and go away believing what the authorities tell us when they lie.

The 80's was a decade that the authorities treated the people of Britain with contempt especially the working class. That is my view.

i think they are lucky they aren't playing Juventus on the 25th anniversary, if they are angry at the police imagine how much the families of those Juve fans that died feel about Liverpool.
just before people start, I'm not saying they shouldn't have this show of respect on the 25th anniversary i think they should, i would want it for our fans and it wasn't those 96 who were responsible for Heysel,

Fantastic post mate.

Hillsborough goes so far beyond Liverpool football club, as most Liverpool fans would attest to I'm sure- it's about football fans collectively remembering how bad it was and ensuring it never goes that way again. That may sound callous, because of course it's also about remembering the 96 lives, yet it has to have a wider meaning to be respected nationwide imo.

The wider political point I agree with but wouldn't like to expand on in this section of the forum.

Spot on. I remember that day vividly, at the time I was working every Saturday as was my mate at work, a born and bred (and yes, delusional) Scouser who, but for work, would have been at Hillsborough that day. We listened on the radio as it all unfolded and tried, not very successfully, to reassure him that all his mates who were there would be ok. As others have said, there are wider football issues involved as well as the tragic loss of lives. Liverpool quite rightly recognise the anniversary as would every club if they had suffered a similar event.
