Liverpool (h) - CL QF post match thread

I read this forum constantly and some points I agree with and some I don’t. As a season ticket holder and I attend all the games when not away on business and hopefully I manage to see them on the box if I can’t be there.

We have seen some magnificent football and not only this year but in recent times but especially this year.

Let’s concentrate on the last few games minus the terrible refereeing. LFC first leg caught cold and piss poor first goal, Sane giving the ball away needlessly putting everybody under pressure....bang 1-0. They get a lift and score 2 further quick goals. Silva and Kev caught in possession numerous times. Second half all city without creating anything of any note. As I say forget the referee....look at the creativity of the team.

Saturday 2-0 at half time and could have been 5 or 6. We come out second half and straight away start playing deeper thus inviting pressure. Why is that? UTD did nothing in the first half so why change what was working. Beggars belief. We should be able to defend a 2-0 goal lead against anybody.

Last night mirrored Saturday....all city first half and then started off deep second half inviting pressure again.

I have said between friends and been ridiculed many times when I have said Otto is not good enough for this team. One he has no pace....Ferna makes him look a better player due to his own positioning but if he gets dragged out then Otto panics and dives in and ends up all over the place. Having heart is all well and good and he has plenty of it but ultimately he is not good enough for this team.

KDB looks burnt out but a marvellous player, Jesus is the future and not for now, Sergio if fit enough for the bench starts every time, Bernardo taken off last night was a disgrace, Sane either red hot or poor ...no in between but that maybe lack of experience, Sterling played in prem long enough now and there can’t be many more excuses for him (I would persevere). Laporte looks ok but again not much pace. Stones outstanding before the injury and bobbins since he came back so hopefully a good preseason sorts him out, Mendy back will be a blessing, David Silva best player I have seen in a city shirt, Ferna....we are becoming too reliant on him, he can’t always be great. Danilo a squad player, Walker gone off the boil but a good season. Ederson magnificent at times and will be even better, Delph been great considering he isn’t a left back, Vinnie a legend but again we can’t rely on him all the time anymore although his fitness seems good at the minute. Foden and Diaz I would like to see more of.

I know I have mentioned both above but Sane and Sterling have to improve the final ball as possession means nothing as Arsenal fans will tell you! I know Sterling as scored a lot of goals but how many should he have had?

As much as the haters think we have a massive squad, when you break it down we don’t in terms of quality in my opinion.

It looks like we will scramble over the line somewhat now but I don’t care because we have been the best team by some distance.

I would like to see a top defender with pace and top striker. Easier said than done.

All in all it as been a great season and 2 trophies I would have taken in August with some of the best football I have ever seen in the prem.

Rant Over

My Bluemoon link must be corrupted, I seem to have signed into RAWK.... Not sure why you felt the need to come here and add your two-penneth.... Finger's crossed you'll get a fucking good hiding in the semi... That would make me feel better.

We had no shots on target? Apart from the perfectly good goal that was disallowed you mean? Deluded ****
I didn't come to give my 2 pence worth, be a Liverpool hater if you like, I get it, after the coach attack I don't blame you, it was totally out of order, I also didn't like firmino's celebration after his goal last night but it all comes down to us being more clinical than you

Apart from score??! Which we seem to find difficult to do at the moment.
We scored twice and hit the inside of the post, Liverpool were defending like their lives depended on it as you’d expect and they hung on by the skin of their teeth

During the game it felt like we had a chance, with the exception of the referee, at least up until half time. The longer the game went on you could noticably sense fans giving up what little hope they had and it did seem to transmit it a bit to the players particularly in the 5-10 minute spell before their first goal. Regardless the players tried their best and I don't know if it's just me, but we've looked knackered around 70 mins in all three of the last fixtures.

This article, especially the last paragraph say it all for me now...

2 legitimate goals ruled out.
1 stone wall penalty.

And one of those goals was a huge game changing one. Instead our manager is sent packing to the stands and the atmosphere completely changes.

Over the 2 legs you were marginally better. You got the rub of the green though, and in a big way.

And can I remind you that you'll win fuck all this season just like the last 15 years.

We have 2 pots. So go fuck yourself.

Otherwise thanks for coming.
Win fuck all in 15yrs, last time I checked 2005 was only 13yra ago (we won the champions league if you can't remember)

Agree with others that the away goal was vital at Anfield. I understand not playing Sterling but Bernardo instead of Gundogan would have given us more threat.

Laporte at left back made Sane’s game suffer so on both flanks, which is the very things we rely on, we were compromised.

Last night, we did indeed create the perfect storm (in the first half). Had the goal stood, we could have bolstered the defence at half time and played next goal winner.

Laporte will be very good for us. He looks so assured. If Stones can rediscover his early season form, it could be a great partnership for years.

Raheem Sterling needs to commit to finishing. I know this is the post Liverpool thread but I’m trying to sum up how I feel after the last seven days. That stabbing motion infuriates me because it relies on the connection being perfect. Following through means you take some of that risk away.

The refs have been bent. I’ll take nothing away from Liverpool, they scored 5 goals over two legs. We’ve been told time and time again though that momentum is all important. When Liverpool had it at Anfield, they put us to the sword. When we had it at Anfield, we were denied a goal and a penalty. When we had it last night we were denied a second goal and lost it. When Liverpool had it last night, they scored twice.

BT sport glorified the coach attack and then last night when the match came on, every clip on the pre-match montage showed red flares. This despite Liverpool warning their own fans not to take them.

The pundits might be growing up. I can accept Lineker and have always liked him. The presenter’s job is to provoke debate. He didn’t play for us so owes us no loyalty. Rio Ferdinand has always been up towards the top of my hate list but is becoming one of the best of the lot.

Liverpool FC and Merseyside Police are a disgrace for what happened at Anfield and should both be asked serious questions.

Juergen Klopp has gone up in my estimation over the past week. I thought he was towing the party line over the coach attack initially but afterwards, when he had more time to talk, he spoke eloquently and emotively and condemned those responsible. He DOES get his teams performing to a level that is greater than the sum of its parts and I’d be happy if we appointed him after Pep decides to move on.

I’d put in a bid close to the Neymar fee for Salah. Imagine a front three of Sane, Agüero and Salah? Good grief.

Our atmosphere CAN be epic. We just need to embrace at least one group home fixture and EVERY home knockout fixture in the Champions league and maybe the time has come to stop booing.

The past 7 days have been a huge disappointment but the season shouldn’t be spoiled by it nor lose its shine. We’ve won a cup, we’ll set more records, we’ve got a trip to Wembley to come, we could win the league at the London Stadium or the Etihad, the trophy lift will be far calmer than ever before, Yaya will get a great send off, we only have one more season of Nike, it has been our best season ever, next year the team will be improved and have a year’s extra experience.

Keep smiling blues.

One bad week spoilt the efforts of months. its a strange season where after winning 1 trophy and in touching distance with second there is a sense of great disappoinment after united n liverpool results. May be we all started expecting too much or may be its the dip that everyone was hoping we had in the league is happening now. Whatever the reason but it was just 1 bad week and while we criticize or contemplate over this shit week we shouldnt forget the entertainment n next level football we witnessed all season.

Pep in his interviews and pressers often insist about sticking to his style of play at all times and it is true he never changes but at the european level may be he needs to rethink his strategy. His results with bayern n now us have a similar feel to it. There is nothing wrong with being pragmatic once in a while. Kloop understands pep rigidness to being on the front foot better than any 1 and he manages to exploit it more often than not with counter attack setup imo. Once liverpool are made to be the agressor they struggle.

Hi level headed Liverpool supporter here, please don't hate me, I can see why you are all angry at going out, I agree with most of you that the goal should of been given last night and the referees were weak but we have all had decisions go against us in the past, just because it was on the biggest stage it looks and feels much worse, Liverpool have had stone wall pens not given in the prem all season, who knows maybe we could of been a lot closer to you in the league, you move on!! You have to look at yourselves 1st
First off if both clubs got the decisions they should have, I'd wager we'd be even further ahead of you. I realise with the amount of points we've won we couldn't get many more points but it's easier on the legs the sooner you score or the bigger the cushion or the less players the opposition have on the pitch. We may have had fewer injuries, less fatigue and so on leaving us fresher at this point of the season. Walker sent off against Everton??? Sterling sent off against Bournemouth??? Numerous penalty shouts AND numerous red card challenges that Sky and BT don't like showing replays of they are that bad. David Gill out is all I can say because something stinks at the FA... I noticed a lot of Liverpool fans picked up on Young's challenge at the weekend but the sad thing is that's become normal this season, as crazy as it sounds it's a typical ref decision for us... how there hasn't been a leg break is a miracle.

no shots on goal in the first leg, that is your down fall not the refs

That's the problem with stats they sometimes flatter to deceive if you let them(BT's highlights are crap too they omitted key moments like the foul on Sterling)... we didn't create many clear chances at Anfield you are correct but the fact is we did score 1 goal that was incorrectly ruled out(Sané was level you can see by the lines on the cut of the grass) and we should have had a penalty for a clear foul on Sterling followed by a hand ball in the same incident = a "double penalty" as your own Gerard said it.

Another point was although we hadn't had shots on goal you'd created nothing in the first 10 mins and were getting bossed in the middle of the park with us looking more likely to score(McManaman even commented to that effect around the 10 min mark and he's one of yours) until a minute later where you were allowed a clear offside(you all knew it was offside in real time admit it haha) in the build up to the first goal that shouldn't have stood.

That shifted the momentum slightly to even things up and after that Oxlade scores from outside the box simply by being given too much space on the ball with nothing to lose and then you actually started creating chances as our defenders went to bits... you were good for the 3rd goal I'll give you that. Second half you sat back and defended(don't blame you for that) which made it harder for us to break you down. The key to the first half which is the only half you created scoring chances was when the momentum shifted because of that offside goal... momentum is everything in a big game away from home.... 3-2 or even 3-1 would have made a big difference for us in the home leg but they wouldn't even give us one of those correct calls after gifting you the opener.

Cue last night where City fans are understandably hoping for a much better/fairer performance from the match officials with the mistakes in the first leg in mind...

City score early and then Liverpool are all over the place for pretty much all of the first half(your best spell at home lasted only 23minutes until half time after going 2-0 up as I discussed above) City zipping balls across your penalty area, most of our players camped in and around the edge of your box making plenty of chances --dispite BT's attempt to say otherwise at full time-- there were attempts from Bernardo Silva who flashed two just wide and one that would have gone in if not for Loveren glancing it onto the post(which counts as off target driving home how stats flatter to deceive), to cap it off City eventually score a second goal which would have Liverpool fearing the worst coming out in the second half... but no-wait it's chalked off incorrectly adding insult to injury from the first leg. There are desperate claims to defend the decision from the pro liverpool UK media(BBC, BT) pointing to the keepers position being ahead of Sané, missing the fact that Milner plays the ball with his knee rendering the offside argument completely moot... "ahhr ehh they're unlucky there sometimes you get those though" McManaman utters with a sigh of relief.

So instead of Liverpool bricking it even more than they were at 1-0 going off at 2-0 down at half time, City players leave the field at half time incensed adamant the ball was played by Milner and the goal should have stood. The ref sends Pep to the stands for the second half for having the cheek to complain about being robbed again. Liverpool are then able to gather themselves during the break having been let off the hook again and dig in for the second half it must have been a real mental boost for them. By contrast our players' heads understandably start dropping as the minutes tick by in the second half leading to stray balls, openings and errors at the back as the situation gets more desperate... you score 2 out of 2 chances but at least there were no dubious referee calls directly involved in those... The damage though, was already done in that first half, it killed the momentum City worked so hard for, when the odds were already slim the ref made damn sure there could only be one outcome.

Nobody can blame Liverpool for how it panned out I get what you're saying on that point, we'd have readily taken an offside goal, sighs of relief as one of yours is chalked off, likewise watching a replay of one of our players first taking a player out and then handling it in our penalty area only for the ref to say play on(you really must have rubbed your eyes when they showed the replay of that haha).

I remember it well. So did the whole fucking world. I guess that's just how you roll.

And 13-15, says more about you than it does me that you have no shame in actually arguing that point!

It's still 13 whole years dude, suck it up!

To be perfectly honest, this last week has taken the gloss off the season. That's strange given that we'll be champions.

Some really good points in there for me. I'm going to stick my neck out though on the Salah point. This could just be a great season for him and fair play. Let's wait and see for a season or two and see how he develops then. We've seen these type of players before.

Disappointing result but it was always going to be hard.
We have had an outstanding season and I just think at the moment the players look mentally and physically tired. Lets cheer the lads over the line and go again next season.

Fowler and McPointalot robbed wages from us. Barton was just an utter moron - should have had a far better career than he did. Have we ever had a decent scouser play for us? Steve Redmond is the only one that comes to mind.

You were more clinical - fact accepted.

The behaviour of Firmino as with some others is revealing an arrogance and unsavoury manner within the team which matches the attitude of many of your supporters . The City " welcoming party " by your feral fans was a disgrace, although your fans are expert and adept at behaving in the most unruly and shameful manner over many years .

Overall with the arselicking you get from the media, your club is as obnoxious as the Rags , and that is not meant as a compliment.

There are few posters who are Liverpool supporters who are really welcome on this forum and that is due to their overall arrogance and lack of humility imo.

Dear oh dear you are 17 points behind us and we have a game in hand but you think you would have been close of it had not been due to penalties you did not get??
