Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

It’s both.

Rico cant defend. He can’t attack. He’s 2’7”. He weighs 4 stone. All he has going for him, is being able to take Peps instructions and move into the middle and pass sideways/backwards. If Rico isn’t inverting, he doesn’t have a career.

Where this is on Pep, is his insistence that Rico is that player. The inverted full back can work. We have seen it. We’ve won trophies with it. Pep’s mistake is thinking that we can play inverted with Rico. We can’t.
It’s all on pep he picks him, what is Rico meant to do de select himself

Am I going mad?

I thought the better team lost today and if Haaland's on the pitch we get at least a point

Two individual mistakes and a ridiculously lucky deflection ends up in our goal. Absolutely nothing drops for us for the whole match

I'm getting pelters on a whatsapp group for suggesting this (admittedly hardly any blues on there)... but I stand by it
Yes you are mate, we created absolutely fuck all, dippers were happy to sit deep and and stop us from creating anything and we had no answer, and believe me if they had to attack more and press they would've done so easily and we would've had no answers, but they didn't need to.

How can any manager send out a message saying, it's ok to be 2nd best this season because of what we have won in the past, Pep is the best manager in the world and letting players know its OK to lose is the biggest mistake in his career at City,

Being 2nd best is OK after the final game is played and you come up short, But saying in mid-season Kills any hope of winning the bigger games like today, We might as well shake hands before kick-off against the bigger teams,

Losing with fight and passion and coming off the pitch knowing you gave your best and 100% is what is required
Being Champions 4 times in a row doesn't give you the right to cheat the fans, No matter who you are ? or what you have won in the past,

Every Time You Put that City Shirt On and Cross the White line you give your best and 100%
Pep you are wrong ?? it's not OK to be 2nd best at any stage of your City career.
Football is cyclic, Mouriniho was once considered the best, right here rich now he not the best manager in the world Ancelotti regularly turns him over

We desperately need a captain who leads with passion on the pitch.
Please let that be Rodri next season.

They didn't really need to play well though, did they? They knew their defence is effective, and would keep on snuffing us us out just long enough for them to add a couple of goals and knock us out!
Yeah, that’s the frustrating part. We never really got in the game. Even after half time at 2-0 I thought we’d have a right go and we just didn’t.

Giant Haaland shaped hole up front
Giant KDB shaped hole in the middle**
Giant Stones shaped hole at the back

** it's as if he wasnt there. Well, the KDB that we came to know and love. His worst performance in a City shirt. The look on his face when his first half shot hit the corner flag, was a look of resignation. A beaten man. An "I'm done" moment of realisation. Sad to see.

The least arsed I've been about losing a big match that I can remember. We just didn't the quality on the pitch.

Why KDB wasn't put out of his misery at half time baffles me.

Up the fucking Blues.

I said a few weeks back that they have an effective system and are very efficient without catching the eye. That is what we saw today. On the other hand I'm effing dumbstruck at our defensive showings this season. Those 2 goals today were more or less assists from us and we just don't learn. We look bang average.
Perfectly summed up.

It's not necessarily a change in formation im looking for, it's the gameplan and the mentality.

With what weve got, when we get the ball, we should be looking for the first and second pass to be forward balls, look to get the ball to the danger men wherever they are as quickly as possible to give them space to attack and to give them that imbalance in the oppositions formation to exploit before they can recover. We know what that looks like as its pretty much how we concede every single goal.

We are too slow to build up an attack, we let the opponents stick 10 behind the ball and we often don't have the tools to break through that, especially without Haaland. Look at Newcastle, all the goals came from us attacking quickly and directly, that's also how Liverpool concede the majority of their goals and how we need to be prepared to play.

It doesn't mean we have to turn it into a basketball match, we can slow things down and pass the ball for periods but we need that different approach and change of tempo in our game, we've got the players for it, I'd even argue we're actually better suited to play that way now but peps still trying to recreate last seasons style with tools that aren't meant for that.

Interesting mate. I commented similarly (in a round about way) in my first post match post.

For me, if Pep wants to stick to the tried and tested style we need to replace Kev, Gundog, Walker, Stones and Kovacic with the “new” version of each. Replicate them.

Otherwise, we do need to change the style and like you say, change to a side who wins games not just through control but through killer transitions, or balls over the top, or through set pieces.

How as Phil gone from being the Premier Leagues player of the season to guy whose lucky to make our staring 11? Very unusual for a player to fall so far off a cliff.
Because when we are playing teams off the park he is a peacock.

Now we have to do more of the off the ball dirty work he doesn't wanna know.

Luxury player when we are playing like this.

You’re not going mad. We were fine. A shadow of our former selves, which is an incredibly high bar, but we were fine.

No Akanji, Dias, Stones, Rodri or Haaland. Young lads looking good (apart from Rico).

We’ll be back.
Rico played fine...he's brave on the ball, willing to play progressive round the corner passes, rather than just safe ones. He is tenacious. He is also mobile and gets around the pitch. His reading of the game is good too, nicking the ball on a number of occasions.

His big weakness at the moment is to believe he is stronger on the ball than he is, and an aversion to a % ball, leading to lost possession in poor areas at times. This is being brutally exposed by Rodri's absence and therefore has often led to big chances or goals.

When Rodri is back and (if) Rico keeps maturing, he will be a very good player in this side.

If people think normal service will be resumed next season they're in for a rude awakening. Even with Rodri back and Haaland playing today we seem to be lacking in a few areas.
Yes the midfield needs a complete revamp and it will be a a long haul back to the top but we have the resources and the motivation to do it.

We need this challenge , we have created our own hurdles and now its start of overcoming them.

No ride to the top is smooth.

Not long back from rain central with different emotions. We kind of played ok at times, young lad at the back did well. We also did well getting stuck in to win possession but, and here’s the thing, we are so slow at getting the ball forward they had everyone behind the ball, KDB can’t even make basic passes any more and I’m not convinced Foden gives a shit. Marmoush was the only player who looked like scoring and when he got the hook I knew the gig was up. Unless Big Erl is back I can see the same happening at Spuds. Anyway fuck it, they’ll never win four in a row !

Pro number 1; it makes it very difficult for the Tarqs to win the title.

Pro number 2; it'll piss off the rags, as a dips title win will (I think) bring them level with "TWGC"™ on title wins.

Con number 1; it makes it considerably easier for the dips to win the title.

Con number 2; it makes qualification for the top 4 harder for us.

:-/

Wolves caused them more problems than us, we have no killers, no intensity and had no idea how to beat them
