Liverpool (H) - Post-Match Thread

Foden was sat on the bench mate.
Yes and not used again. Foden is not Silva no matter how much we want him to be. He does not dictate games like Silva.

The only way to find out is for pep to play him and he has restricted his role to a winger.

Point remains: the team is not functioning in attack without Silva.

Pedestrian double pivot, a knackered and then for the last 15 clearly injured Kev, then toothless in attack.

Sort the defence out finally and now we can't score more than a goal a game.

Something needs to click soon up top.

We're struggling to score as Pep now thinks our best midfield includes Rodri + Gundi which means were waiting on kdb pulling off a bit of magic . For 2 years we looked brillian with 2 creators in the middle, now Pep seems more scared of losing than trying to beat any better than average team

We had a perspective thread a while back and wish some would love ok at that. Of course disappointed not to win especially with a pen just before half time but hand on heart I am sure many would have settled for a point, especially being 1down.
We have invested heavily and had the team of the decade, winning by multiple honours and setting records that maynever be broken.
We ARE in TRANSITION with most of the world class spine of the team gone or going. Therefore, expectations of running away with the league are fanciful. I would settle for top 3 and a cup whilst the managerial situation is sorted out and we spend on high quality. As it is I think we are slowly getting bettet

I think the most obvious difference between our style of play and Liverpool's is our actions on turnovers. In short Liverpool always look to exploit any space at speed whilst our mantra is to simply make a pass. It's bloody infuriating and ponderous to watch as by the time we've decided to attack, Liverpool have everyone covering, yet if we lose possession we are often outnumbered as our midfielders look like they are treading water.

What also kills our attacks is Sterling. His situational awareness is pitiful. He runs with his head down, often into dead ends and seems completely incapable of doing anything along the lines of picking out a team mate in a better position.

Our momentum going forward seems exclusively the responsibility of Walker and Cancelo, the rest just want to pass sideways.

In short Foden must be used to increase energy and Sterling should not be staying on the field when Torres is being removed.

Finally, the fact this is continuing has to be down to the uncertainty over Guardiola's contract. It's just all a malaise.

I get your love for Silva. Phil does pull this version of city forward and injects urgency along with no small amount of guile and skill. I didnt reas what prompted this conversation but i think he comes on for Sterling at least with 15 minutes to go in an ideal world.

Should have called it a draw at sixty minutes, both sides looked knackered. Fantastic goal from Jesus, De Bruyne has plenty in the credit column to excuse his pen. don’t think we are good enough to win the league this season, if Ain’t us I couldn’t give a bollox who does.
Love the free ride being given to KDB. He was rank today - that's not even accounting for his penalty miss. If he's as tired a everyone keeps saying then tell him he can have a month off. Foden and Bernardo (still waiting for him to get up and running this season though) can fill in for him. Nothing excuses a penalty miss at home against your main rivals with the scores level.

Hmm. Disappointed but that is defo sort of game we would have lost last year. Defence less wobberly This year with Dias and Laporte emerging as a great centre pairing. Cancelo was terrific today, trying all sorts and put a chance on a plate for Jesus. Can’t help but think that winning that got away with kevs abberation but there you go. Liverpool would have come at us far more if we had gone into lead with that penalty. Liverpool are such a dynamic and fast team we looked in danger of being swept away at the start. So kinda settle for the point. But still puzzled why Phil didn’t come on with ten or more to go Pep when debryne and Rodin clearly knackered and misfiring.

Forgive me if I'm repeating anything
I know it's "every German's dream" to play for the German rags, but we should have moved heaven and earth to keep Sane, and flogged Sterling to the highest bidder. Too many touches, gives the opposition that crucial half a second to adapt. Sterling gives the opposition that opportunity. Sane didn't.
That chance in the first half SHOULD have been buried
You’re speaking with hindsight. Sterling is indeed dogshit this season (so far) but has been a key player in previous campaigns.

I’m guessing we did make every reasonable effort to keep Sane other than placing him on a pedestal where he didn‘t belong. Sterling has also had a brilliant injury record and, even when below par, has posted good numbers.

Let’s just hope he finds his old self again soon - something that might be said of one or two others too.

And Foden isn’t going to fill the gap if he isn’t given the chance. We going to sign someone to play there and shove Foden out wide or leave him on the bench? The kid should be playing and should be playing the Silva role imo.

When I saw Liverpool's team I thought they would be absolutely frantic for the first 20 minutes and that we really had to make sure we didn't concede in that period. When we've murdered them we've stood firm for the first 20 mins and then taken them apart. That's why Kyle's clumsy foul was so unfortunate (not mentioning the foul on Raz at the other end). And their lead kept them going and in the game but the longer the game went on the more they faded. If KdB had put his pen away Liverpool would have crumbled but that's the way things are going at the moment. But there's still a long way to go.
I agree. If you can stop Liverpool scoring in the first 30mins, you always have a chance. They tire. Unfortunately we were as tired as them in the last 30mins.
