Liverpool Post Match

I think today was a bit of a watershed, particularly after Tuesday. We've got everyone available, playing at a stadium where our record is poor and needing a reaction after Tuesday yet we saw nothing but an utter shambles mostly.

The system we play should be largely irrelevant but it must be based on the qualities of the players available. Dzeko & Aguero is not and has never been a viable, starting partnership. We suit a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1and that's the system that won us two titles mostly. 4-4-2 does not work with the players we have, against a better quality team that knows how to play. We need to put a team out that plays as a team, not stick eleven players on the field and hope they gel.

The team that probably should have started was the one that was on the pitch after Milner replaced Dzeko. Or maybe the two Ferns in front of the back four. Keep it tight in midfield for 30 minutes, give them nothing then be a bit more expansive if needed. Yet we are making the same tactical mistakes again and again, which is completely unacceptable at this level. So Pellegrini has to take the complete blame for that.

Then there's the players. It makes things more difficult when your midfield and defence is constantly under pressure but most of the team today simply didn't turn up and there were no leaders on the pitch to grab things by the scruff of the neck. Players like Toure & Nasri, normally so careful with the ball, were giving it away time and time again when there was no excuse for it. Kompany at least had a better second half but Zabba is constantly chasing shadows defensively.

This team needs major surgery but Begiristain's record to date doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence frankly and I don't think that many people still have faith in Pellegrini, who has now been out-thought by such luminaries as Steve Bruce, Fat Sam and Sean Dyche.

I didn't like that we didn't go with the 4-2-3-1 (it would have been ideal if both Navas and Milner would have defended against their wingbacks + enough man in the middle against their CMs, I guess), but I was satisfied with our first half. Liverpool were brilliant, to be fair, but after their initial high pressing we coped with them well, came back with a beautiful goal and enjoyed a bit of a possession.

However, that second half was a shambles though. Fernandinho couldn't cover all that space and we were exposed. Having Silva playing that freely and of course Yaya with his usual non-defending, the chances were just comming. Funnily enough, I think our defenders did a hell of a job in the second; even Kompany improved rapidly, Zabaleta had some spectacular tackles, and Mangala was absolute boss. But the space in front of them was just too much, and of course it's not their fault. Subbing on Milner seemed like a sensible move, but we were still too open centrally. I mean, it was evident that Pellegrini saw we are shit and wanted to play on the counter and looked happy with even a draw, but having Yaya, Fernandinho with Nasri and Silva in the team, we are just not built to defend.

We have a lot attacking players on the pitch but we do not press whatsoever as a team, just as individuals. This is something that should be looked at when we'll be looking for a new coach (let it be this year or after the next season). I'm not sure about Silva, but the likes of Aguero are surely capable of some systematic pressing. And we could buy Alexis of course. :)

I'm his big admirer, but it's obvious now that Pellegrini deserves a lot of stick because his decisions did cost us a lot against Barca and Liverpool.

Toure was awfull and Pellegrini is too little to handle the situation as always...thats why Allen was looking like an alien today...

Our fitness levels and regime also need to be called into serious question when you consider we were steamrollered 2nd half by a team hardly off the fookin plane after a gruelling night in Turkey two nights ago
Simply not up to scratch for this or any other league for that matter

We looked half a sleep today .
City were pathetic today .
We only got going when we were losing .
Kompany was poor again and so was all of our midfield .
Only player that tried his best again today was Silva .
