Liverpool Thread 2011/12

Re: Liverpool Thread 2012

On Carrol and RVP:
just a thought about patience

Patience is difficult, as fans we don't have it but let's consider this:

Andy Carroll

Robin Van Persie

Robin Van Persie joined Arsenal in 2004. 7 seasons ago.
Prior to the 2010 season his best contribution in the league had been 11 goals in a season...

So Carrol is expected to start walking on all fours by 2018...

Can they even afford to with FFP if they miss out on CL again?

I'm sure they can. Their turnover is still up there and I don't think they spend as much as us on wages

I agree with that, but I doubt they'll be able to afford to splash as much as £100 million again this summer if they don't make top 4.

The £100m, half was the Torres sale and half found by the owner, IMO was a last roll of the dice effort to qualify for the chumps before FFPR.
They're now off the train as it's leaving the platform

The timing of FFP has been delicious for us as a club, which given the fact that the likes of Liverpool fans saw it as a way of stopping us in our tracks makes it even sweeter.

I think Liverpool have missed a huge trick regarding revenue, particularly the long-running stadium issue. Their worldwide support base could easily support a 60,000+ seater stadium and I can remember expansion or a new ground being mooted as far back as 20 years ago. Since then, the explosion in popularity of the Premier League has seen the likes of Arsenal and United greatly increase matchday and corporate revenues because they had the vision to move to a new stadium (in Arsenal's case) and greatly increase ground capacity. Liverpool have simply pussy-footed around and made little progress on that front.

In all fairness, any aspirations they have had with regards to that have been hampered by planning committees and local residents. One interesting thing of note is the revenue that fans from outside Merseyside bring in to the city as a whole on and around matchdays must be immense. I think Liverpool City Council have been shortsighted in the extreme in failing to help LFC as much as possible to grow this source of income by oiling the wheels of stadium redevelopment (either new or existing) more than has been the case hitherto. These fans will soon disappear and with it, for example, the high occupancy rates that Liverpool hotels enjoy on weekends

The contrast with Manchester City Council is another example of our good fortune and moreover why we are supremely placed to consign LFC to the dustbin of 'istree.

Why would we want that? Honest question because from my point of view, an uncompetitive league in the manner in which the current Spanish league is, would be very boring. Maybe it's just me, but I like the idea of being the best, whilst beating top teams. If Liverpool don't get their shit together, if Arsenal continue to not spend, where does that leave the premiership in the coming years? It's not for me to be honest .... the stronger the league and the teams in it (obviously with the exception of the rags), the more satisfaction I will take from our future successes.

I don't think GDM is saying he wants City to be in a one-horse race every season, just that he'd like to see other teams instead of Liverpool challenging us.

I've no real beef with the few genuine Liverpool fans I know - they're all decent blokes - but the sense of entitlement that some have amongst their ranks is very annoying. As such, I'd like to see someone like Villa or Newcastle challenging us for the title in the future. That might not be such a far-fetched proposition either - there are murmurs of a possible Qatari/Saudi takeover doing the rounds over on VillaTalk.

I would completely agree with your view that the current Spanish set up is not a system that we should be looking to replicate. I have enjoyed this season for many reasons and one is (until recently) the level of competitiveness and the level of excitement in games. We (City) aspire to the Spanish model at our peril as it would make things too sterile.

It's just that I have developed a particular and relatively recent dislike for LFC and most especially its fans in the last couple of years, notwithstanding a few personal friendships. I have previously likened their view to a our new found status as that of a Prestbury housewife who has lottery winners move in next door. They bleat on about history to the point of utter tedium and think that putting YNWA at the end of every statement is the answer to all the worlds problems. I could go on. all day.

I want to see them fail and at the same time enjoy competing at the top with united, Arsenal, Chelsea Spurs and anyone else who's up to it.

Except them.

Re: Liverpool Thread 2012

to be honest gdm, they started with chelsea as soon as abramovich took over always mocking them because of stuff like the free plastic flags given out at champions league games. clubs all over europe do this sort of stuff but the scousers think it's below them despite YNWA being a reactionary song rather than a spontaneous attempt at inspiring their team.

history is ever evolving. we've had a very colourful one and are about to embark on what will be considered a glorious one. they on the other hand, are doing it the other way round. (i didn't purposefully mention colour there).

Do you not think the Prem has been pretty much uncompetitive for years now, with the exception of last season when the supposed better teams had a lack of consistency
