Liverpool are back if Suarez stays fit till the end of the season (he never gets injured). He'll ensure they secure a top four spot and better players will come next year, hopefully they take Utd's spot.

Wary of those contract clauses like but hopefully it'll stop the speculation this January
no, you'll just have speculation about what the clauses in his contract are and when he's signing for Madrid

The significance of this is not that he'll never leave the club, but that we cannot be low balled if he leaves anytime in the near future.

So Madrid would have to pay 85M+ plus, why not throw in Morata too, otherwise they STFU.

If Wenger wanted to pull another stunt, then it's 85.01 M, instead of 40.01 M.

-- Fri Dec 20, 2013 11:08 am --

Wonder what clauses are in that contract, on the face of it though it shows a lot of commitment by Liverpool to keep there prized asset and not just grab the cash.

If they stopped buying a bunch of cheaper players and got an established great player or two for their side they'd become a real force.

We tried Costa and Mkhyratrairyan. They weren't "established" last season, but their current form shows they are proper players.

It's harder for us than you lot though, as players want Champions league, and also while we're hardly destitute, we're not competing financially with the top tier clubs on the transfer market.

It doesn't necessarily mean he's staying for 5 years, just that if another club comes knocking they'll have to pay top whack for him. Bale signed a 5 year deal with Spurs in the summer of 2012 and we all know how that ended.

He'll be at it again in the summer if they don't make the Champions league. A great player no doubt about that, just all the shenanigans that goes with him become tiresome.

As much as I hate being cynical*, I still think this is just a step in the direction of Madrid or whoever for Suarez.

What does Suarez want? I'll admit, I wasn't chatting to him recently, but 'according to an un-named source' (ie I'm guessing), he wants to play in the CL. But he also wants to play for one of the current giants. Isn't he about 26? so he's coming to the peak of his career. If he stays at Liverpool for anything more that a couple of years he's taking a chance that he'll miss out. Maybe he sees it as in his best interest to wait those couple of years, but why would he?

I'm sure he will have decided he'll stay at Liverpool this season; it's a world cup season, he wont want disruption. Next season though is a different kettle of fish. If Liverpool make CL, and even if they get some good players in the summer, they still have a long way to go to live up to what he can justify as expectations. And they are still some big if's.

If I was a Liverpool fan I would be delighted he's signed a new contract as there is a good chance of CL next season, but I would have expected him there until the end of the season anyway. I wouldn't expect to see him there next season though. That's not that it couldn't happen, just that I think the new contract is a way for both sides to avoid a repeat of the summer. Liverpool can now guarantee top dollar (and a slim chance they may just keep him), while he has a clear exit path (which top clubs can afford).

If Liverpool get CL and £50 to £80 million for suarez on top of whatever the transfer budget was already, they may well force their way back into the top 4 as a regular.

All that said, I could be barking up the wrong tree. Maybe he does feel the love, maybe he wants to bask in the glory of being the giant fish in the big(enough) pond?

* That's a lie, I love being cynical.

He's been told that you are signing Garcia for 30m and he couldn't wait to sign a new contract on 200k a week ;)

No city players are even on 200k a week anymore so it's a statement of intent from Liverpool get top 4.. Buy 2 top top players next season and Liverpool will start to become top 4 regularly instead of the rags ;)

The draw for players coming in will also increase in the knowledge they get to play with Luis. I'm over the moon!

I thought Yaya was on > £200k a week? Yep, it seems he is...

He signed a new contract last year 140k a week with incentives that how we are doing thing now like they did at Barcelona

I strongly suspect any release clause for no CL football won't start until the end of 2014/15 season. His salary remains the same until that season so I imagine that's when clauses will kick in.

Hoping we've got a clause in there about ill advised media outbursts

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2011/jul/28/sergio-aguero-manchester-city

What does that have to do with Suarez' contract clauses...ya know, the ones I was talking about...you've quoted that and then posted something about Aguero signing a new contract then leaving? Makes no sense...

I guess the point your making is that Suarez could still leave, I assume the department of the bleeding obvious has finished early for the day??? ;-)
