Rodgers win % at the Red Lion - 51.7%
Moyes win % at the Dog and Duck - 51.9%

Both still Sunday League/Pub team managers though, that's the important part.

Re: The Red Lion Pub Team (Liverpool) Thread 2014/15

Something that I found particularly galling last night was Andy Townsend's obsequious co-commentating. His is the worst kind of drooling sycophancy that has become all too familiar within the English media for the last few decades (well, certainly since the GPC went to the swamp).
Townsend's commentary went beyond mere farce last night, it was as if he himself was sitting in the Kop end, afraid of reprisals from those around him lest he dare to voice an opinion contrary to the masses, rather than being in a studio giving a neutral viewpoint - as he was supposed to be doing.
Ratboy Neville, as a player, was most definitely a puss-filled labia with all the appeal of a haemorrhoid lightly boiled in a saucepan of a cadaver's phlegm, but as a co-commentator he's pretty good. He tells it how it is (his recent 'Dog and Duck' comment bears testament to this), and doesn't seem to let sentiment get in the way of facts. I detested him as a rag, but tacitly admire his knowledge and viewpoint and -dare I even suggest- respect him for it.
Townsend, on the other hand, was everything a pundit should not be: his obvious contempt for anyone not playing for the Dippers was all too apparent, and showed him for what he is, a narrow-minded, sycophantic, arse-licking bigot of the worst kind.

Question to Bluemooners (piss-take's aside for a moment):

After a team like ourselves or Spurs sell a Suarez or Bale, the mantra is that you go for quality over quantity. So far, so good. Now here's the question I've been wondering about.

Can a team like Liverpool even attract a quality player at the top end of the market? We've been unable to do Costa and Sanchez recently.

Maybe we should've bought a 30-40M attacker and a 30-40M defensive all-action midfielder, but 1. Were any available at that price in this market? 2. Would they want to come? and 3. Could we have paid the wages?

I think the issue is not so much quality over the quantity. The issue is that the team has a shocking scouting system and our academy is not producing (it looked promising last season with Sterling, Flanagan and Suso). The transfer committee either needs to be fired or ownership/fans need to readjust expectations and be willing to tolerate seasons like this with the hope of challenging for Europe in seasons when the signings supposedly come to fruition.

This is where a sense of reality needs to hit home for many of your fans mate. Forget the history and focus on the here and now and for you, its not good enough to be able for you to sign the quality needed.

The FFP many of your lot cling too as the saviour of football will ultimately fuck you right in the arse and stop you getting to where you want.

We are through the door whilst its virtually slammed shut on you.

Not sure whether you can't attract top quality players, or just arent prepared to pay the going rate in wages.

Had a look earlier, Rodgers average transfer spend is only about £4m nett per window less than Mancini's which bought in the likes of Yaya, Silva, Aguero, Nasri etc.

You're not going to get the top players without paying the going rate in wages, so if FSG arent prepared to fund that your transfers are going to be hit or miss. Suarez was on big money so it is there for the right player.

You also seemed to spend a lot on players that didnt improve your first 11.

Suarez was so good that you should have spent the vast majority of that £120 mil replacing him with just 1 or 2 players even if you had to go way over the odds regarding wages/signing on fees. Last summer was your chance, you blew it bigtime. I honestly feel you may not recover for a generation.

I would say no you can't unless, like the rags did last summer or we did after the takeover, you pay over the odds. Which is why FFP is so wrong the only way into the big money elite is to invest heavily. We did just in time, now it's very difficult to break in.

Re: The Red Lion Pub Team (Liverpool) Thread 2014/15

I'm hearing he's gone by the 22nd of this month. Fans are deluded and think Klopp or Benitez will be in by Xmas.

And no, Liverpool cannot recruit a top quality, in their prime player. I can't for the life of me remember them ever doing so. Sure, they got a young Torres and a young Alonso and developed them into that level of player, and got Suarez just as he was about to become one, but they've never managed to recruit a big name who can deliver. The Sanchez deal was strange. All parties wanted Sanchez to Liverpool but he point blank refused, holding out for us, Arsenal, United or Chelsea. I have no honest answer as to why they've never gotten a big name in, but year in year out they talk of David Villa, Silva, Aguero, Rues, Ribery, Sanchez etc and end up with some up and comer no one has heard of other than football manager.

That's the conundrum. I'm wondering if that is even possible. The other part of the equation is the player wanting to come, but also probably we need better salesmanship from the owners, manager, commercial director and "transfer committee". The player wanting to come is tricky also because it can be an excuse to avoid big wage players. How hard did we really try and go after Sanchez? No one will ever really know.
