I'm sure they'd accept that these days were much worse than a day when a civil law case between a corrupt trade association and one of its members resulted in said trade association losing that case, due to its own incompetence and the fact that the said member hadn't done anything wrong in the first place..''

Love your post, but don’t like your deployment of the word ‘said’ in that context. I far prefer ‘the foregoing’.
