I think you’re conflating two separate issues here. Of course top players want to play in the Champions League rather than the Europa League. That’s a given.

Using your logic though, do you really think a player is more likely to sign for, say, Schalke than Man United? The Champions League evidently isn’t the be all and end all.

But that proves my point - Schalke aren’t likely to win it but if United were in it with a suitable squad then of course players will be interested. They’ve got the proven pedigree.
Did Ronaldo sign for Madrid to win La Liga?

Don’t get you?

I presume he joined Madrid for a number of reasons. Money, climate, and culture presumably all played a part. Do you think the Champions League was the sole factor, given he’d won it the season before with United?! Anyway, it’s getting late so I’ll bid you good night and leave you with this:

I want us to win the league, of course I do. I’m old enough to have seen us win it and we’ve got a great chance this year. But winning the European Cup is like nothing else. And Madrid is hardly perspective, look at the other perceived heavyweights in the European standings. Only Milan in front of us, another club steeped in EC history. Every elite club in Europe gears their season towards the CL, us and you included. I want that league badly but I’d be just as happy if we won the CL again. Nothing like it.
Let's take Madrid out of the equation 'cos they've won it loads of times.. Oooh aren't we good!! haha! You have lost 5 of the last 7 away games in the Champions League you have played since the start of last season .. You lost 4 out of the 13 games you played last year in winning it.. it's a glorified cup competition.. Good job you don't have to qualify for it as Champions of your own Country first, your fantastic record in the competition would look a bit shit then I think with you not winning your domestic league for 29 years or so.. Champions of Europe.. your not even the best team in the North West ffs... European Royalty my arse..

Of course all those things play a part but at the end of the day, they’re moving for their job and the professional ambition it entails. To sign for them, you have to believe you can compete for the biggest prizes every year, their culture demands it.
I think the article needs to be taken in context but fair tackle. Night mate, enjoyed the chat.

We qualified as winners many times. We won four, still more than most European clubs have ever been near. As I said earlier, no British club in any era can touch our achievements there. We have a trophy to keep - not many can say that. And also as I said earlier, the format is irrelevant - it’s what you do when it matters that counts. You were as unlucky as it gets last year but that’s hard lines. Doesn’t mean you won’t be there at the end this year.
I guarantee you one million percent if you win it this year, you won’t talk about it like that.
The Madrid thing is a daft comparison - are all other teams in Europe shite because they’re even further away from them?
