It's actually the mid 60's to mid 70's.
When Shankley came in they were a mid 2nd division club who then started spending money (Littlewoods dirty gambling money) equivalent to what 1st division clubs were spending and they were promoted.
By the time they sold Keegan and replaced him with Dalglish, the money was naturally coming in through league titles and Euro Cups - and being part of the top teams demanding that home teams kept all of the gate receipts, thus weakening those other first division sides financially who attracted smaller crowds.
..oh like Arsenal, then? ;-)

This is the thing about Liverpool and the rags fans claiming that their money is "organic".
It isn't. They shafted the smaller clubs as mentioned.
Then with the advent of the Premier League they positioned themselves to earn a greater share of the cash by being on TV more times than the rest...... so the rich got richer and poor got poorer..... and they were able to float on the stock market and get richer. Buy the best players and pay more for them / afford bigger wages.
Clubs like Leeds tried to join the club and almost folded trying to keep up..... yet City are ruining football......
Then of course the big 3 of Liverpool / rags and Arsenal wanted more so formed the G14 group and carved up the European Cup (that only one could enter) and morphed it into the Champions League where all (and eventually Chelsea too) could feast at an even bigger trough and the gap between the haves and have nots continued to widen so much so that apart from Blackburn and Everton (one season each) no other English club competed in the Champions League until Spurs broke in 2010 and City the following season.
Their money was never organic but acquired at the expense of every other club in England.
It's like a Duke or Earl today sitting in the family mansion telling everyone that his family had inherited the stately home fairly and had acquired it via organic funding when the truth is the royals pillaged and.plundered the land and rewarded those faithful to the crown with handsome rewards at the expense of the rest of the population.

What Liverpool / rags and Arsenal did was exactly the same

I'm calling it out now. I think lfc are on the downward curve. Ageing midfield, I am sure Salah has turned into a prima donna who the rest of the team dont actually like, Klopps only game seems to be the hard pressing but try doing that with an ageing or poor midfield, some of the player looked disinterested yesterday

So today I am going to dream, its the end of lfc, the bit where Klopp has a Dortmund style meltdown at the clubs owners whilst he tries to compete with Peps machine.
I so hope you are right but still think they will be our main contenders this season.
If your vision does prove to be prophetic then it is going to be entertaining to watch their demise and the entitled muppets that form their fanbase in meltdown.

Indeed, indeed.. good post.

It was ever thus throughout the history of the game, whether here in England or in any other country.. as Dylan put it, 'Money doesn't talk, it swears..'

The latest English manifestation has been the accretion of money and power since 1992 by The Red Filth, The Scouse Red Filth and The Tarquins, having left Everton and Spurs of the original 'Big Five' in their trail. This has only been affected by the arrival of first Chelsea and then City on the scene to challenge the privileges that hegemony had enjoyed for such a long time.

Btw, your 'landed gentry' example at the end of your post reminded me of the old Bernard Manning story about him being challenged by some 'hooray Henry' herbert to 'get off his land' when Bernard was walking in the countryside. Manning asked how he came to own the land and the herbert described generations of his forefathers fighting battles for rewards which included the very land they were standing on. 'Okay..' says Bernard 'I'll fight you for it..'

Which is precisely what City and Chelsea have done, pretty successfully too! And as we all know, those three hateful clubs and their followers who've had it all their own way for decades don't like it one little bit.

F**k 'em.
