It’s not a myth for big games. Most weeks Anfield is the same as any other stadium in the country. But there’s not a better atmosphere for big games than Anfield simply because the Kop with its 12,000+ deep one tier and low deep roof helps boom out a massive noise and it’s easy for the rest of the ground to join in with whatever is sung.

Last season in the second half against us the atmosphere was incredible. City fans who went to the CL game there say it was the best they’d ever heard as a visiting fan to another ground.

But give any set of fans Anfield as a stadium (not the prettiest by any stretch) and they’d also make it the best atmosphere in the country for big games because of the set up. Give City a stand like the Kop at the Etihad and we’d have a fantastic stand and atmosphere that everyone would talk about and for the club to market as well (which is why it’s fucking baffling City seemingly want to miss the opportunity with the new NSL2!).

It does also help that most of their songs aren’t those clap along quieter songs and their songs have the big long notes that are dead loud.

Saying that, Lpool fans are saying that the Kop is starting to become tourist central and that new big tier at the Anfield Road end is pretty much all the shit kind of fans everyone hates and it’s affected Anfield’s atmosphere for the worse since opening. Their first big game of the season and the atmosphere was only ‘okay’ on Sunday.
You forgot to mention the grey fluffy microphones located in front of the kop end for big games, in your analogy.
The ones in-between the advertising boards.
The ones players in the past have had to reposition to take a corner down that end.
The greatest atmospheric ground in England that obviously needs a leg up to achieve this.

I distinctly remember hearing a line and a half of "Bluemoon" booming out during "You'll Never Walk Alone" before the draw there in 2018 before Sky turned the microphones down at our end so all tv viewers could "enjoy" their song properly.

Anyone have the stats on when an opposition team was last awarded a penalty at Anfield? Maresco's post-match comments were much the same as Pep after the Milner non-red card debacle when he said "this is Anfield".

I am wondering if Mahrez's in 2018 (which is still travelling towards Mars on last reports) was the last one.
West Ham had one in Oct 22. Before that Sheff Utd, Burnley and Everton had one, that's going back 3 seasons on transfermarket.com

Dippers always pontificate about how Bingo and the Slot machine have performed miracles to challenge little old City.
In reality it’s the other way round. Pep has performed unbelievable feats in being continuously victorious against a team that has the worlds best player in every single position.

We will have to agree to disagree on this - but I maintain that is a myth which is supported by sky - notice that they tend to have a focus on the anthem just before KO

I can accept the points you make about the physical aspects that could generate noise - but my experiences there are them singing their shit anthem just before KO and occasionally during the game - but pretty quiet for the majority of the game. I also think that they use speakers to amplify the noise level

Bunch of fucking wankers

In the U.S., I remember a game at Anfield where the NBC commentators literally said “Let’s all take a moment to soak in the atmosphere as the Kop sings ‘YNWA’ and we experience Anfield in full voice!”

It was a fucking embarrassment, as it was clear the volume was turned waaay up to deliver the “famous Kop atmosphere.”

That said, the whole “European night” nonsense feels like it’s a real thing at times. For me, I’ve never experienced the Etihad rocking more than the 2-1 victory over them at our place, when Sané scored the winner, they lost for the only time that season, and we beat them to the title! THAT atmosphere was goosebump-inducing, which I’ve only experienced a few times outside of the QPR & Villa last games of the season Title-winning games.

Like many stereotypes, there’s at least a hint of truth to their atmosphere, but I don’t think it’s anything special in many games.

When it comes to City, this guy is the bell end to end all bell ends, his argument with Big Steve is the stuff of YouTube legend, but from his vantage place in Jordan you'd struggle to find a better analysis of the difference between American ownership and Gulf ownership....
