The more serious issue for City here is whether the other part of the rumour is true - that Pep is staying at Bayern beyond 2016. Hence Klopp looking for the next best option now. Because if true this either means City knew he would do that so as to not cost Bayern a settlement fee when he does leave next year - or Pep is not looking to leave Bayern for the next few years at all and those stories about a 'deal' with City were just that - stories.

Now as it stands this does not matter, because Pellegrini is doing well and here for the foreseeable if things continue that way as we all hope. But we also know things might yet change and if City make little headway in the Champions League this year (which might only take not winning the group and getting drawn against Bayern, which is all very possible) then the mood up top at the club may switch come next Spring.

What then if Klopp has gone, Pep is staying put for a few years, and Ancelotti might have even gone to United or Chelsea by then. And if not there may well be lots of competition for the top managers in summer 2016.

I imagine if Klopp goes to Liverpool now then that is because the City management have decided he is not the right character for the club. He is very, very different from Pelle that's for sure. He could just as easily wind up a team as wear them down I suspect.

But I just hope there is not a 100% Pep or bust attitude and that a proper future strategy is in place in case it is necessary.

Maybe they are working towards Patrick as the next manager when Pelle's contract is ended. If so could he get some experience at another club with our blessing and that strategy in mind? Sunderland have him in the list of betting options I note.

I know you cannot make decisions years ahead and tie down top managers up front. But I just worry about this seeming desire to get Pep sometime and hope this is not going to backfire and that there is a proper long term thought out strategy in the event he chooses not to materialise at the Etihad.

I don't think there's ever been anything to suggest that Klopp has ever been on the radar to take the City job. Guardiola yes, he's certainly been linked heavily, and given his history with Soriano and Txiki it wouldn't be a surprise to hear discussions had been had. I think Klopp is a talented manager, but I don't think that means those in charge at City have ever thought he was the right fit for our club. Klopp becoming Liverpool manager wouldn't have any real impact on City directly.

They have the 5th highest wage bill in the PL but are just scraping into 6th place.

Their wage bill is considerably lower than the top 3 so if they want to win the league and challenge for trophies/top 4 then the 5th highest wage bill isn't good enough.

Their wage bill needs to be, at worst, 3rd highest, but probably top 2. Plus they need to be able to show potential signings they have a comprehensive, workable, plan to get themselves to the top of the domestic, and ultimately, World game. That's how City went from a side struggling in the league to one which wins trophies. We couldn't offer trophies straight off the bat, we needed to build a squad first, so we did that by offering selling clubs more money than anyone else, and players higher wages than anyone else, combined with showing those players where we aimed to be in the next few years, and how we would achieve that. Players like Silva and Toure bought into that. We paid them a SHIT LOAD of money, but we also showed them where we were heading. Now, we don't need to outspend everyone else, as we can offer success these days. Don't get me wrong, we still spend a lot on players, and on wages, but we don't need to spend 20%, or 25% more than every other side just to attract a player, we are an attractive proposition ON the pitch these days too.

Liverpool are in the situation City found themselves in. They can't attract top level players as they can't offer success. So, they need to pay them more. The aren't willing to do that, so they don't get top level players. This also falls in line with their owner's approach whereby they don't actually target top level talent in the first place.

And if they do uncover a rough diamond that isn't being paid top dollar, someone will come along and poach him.
It's a dilly of a pickle.

It would if it meant Guardiola stayed at Bayern, though. Which is what he was saying. Not that Klopp was coming to City, but that Klopp going to Liverpool would be indicative of Pep staying at Bayern and thus not coming to City. Which would be a disaster for us. Since that was the whole point in not sacking Pellers after last year's second half of the season!

Klopp joining Liverpool would not impact City. Guardiola staying at Bayern would impact City. Guardiola staying at Bayern would impact Klopp. You're getting cause and affect mistaken. Klopp joining Liverpool could indicate that Guardiola was staying at Bayern, which in turn would impact City, however Klopp's decision wouldn't have caused Guardiola's decision, it would have been driven by it.

I'm all for Klopp, but I hope all our fans will remember that:

1. HE IS NOT THE LIVERPOOL MANAGER.
2. For better or worse, he is kind of a loon. He'll be another character from Rodgers or say Mourinho, but in a different way.
3. Bundesliga is a 1.5 team league.
4. He's not infallible--Dortmund were struggling in his last season.
5. We cannot afford to start going off like this fan comment AGAIN:

A one club man spending his entire playing career at Mainz, looking to build a dynasty by all accounts. Spurning Bayern (it would seem) for us, happy to move his family to the city, visited every trophy room in the building that time Dortmund played at Anfield - staff at the ground said it bordered on weird how interested in Liverpool he was such was the level of questioning from him...

No, just no!
