Liverpool v City 1st leg CL Qtr Final post match

It's quite amazing this is the first post i've read about Klopp, after casually reading dozens of forums, that nails it. Klopp is a one trick pony. If he can't play his game, he has no plan B, he is unable to change the course of a game tactically. He can hope one of his players makes the difference individually, but he lacks the vision to turn a game around when it's not going his way, imho. So i found it shocking that Pep played right into his cards, with this lineup. By talking out Sterling, Pep effectively slashed De Bruyne's effectiveness by one third.

But, to be honest, the game could have gone differently, all the same. Salah's goal should never have happened. Not just the offside issue, but defensively this goal could have been prevented more than once. If Sané passes to De Bruyne instead of going for personal succes, it could have been 1-1. The second goal, as beautiful as it was, it wasn't even a created chance, "merely" a quality strike, but if he were to try it 5 times over, it would not go in again. Etc. This game could also have been 2-1, which would have been quite the difference.

But credits to Liverpool. They stuck to what they know and executed their only plan brilliantly.
Agree with you on Sterling. Their second goal was a good strike, but Kompany or Otamendi should have picked him up - probably Kompany, given he was the left CB.

Klopp has just got Pep’s number.

I found it really interesting to see how Klopp set them up tonight, very very narrow when we had possession - their midfield 3 were within 10 yards of each other the whole game. They press with just their front 3 and the 3 midfielders just get on their toes ready to push on. It was just so fucking easy for them. Astonishing that we weren’t able to deal with it.

Agreed. Especially without Sterling in the first half, they dared Sane to beat them and he couldn't. We also hit so many crossfield floaters that were off target, and when on target, they rushed to us while our guys were bringing the balls down and closed off space.

If VAR was used the game would have ended 2-2 but it's not used for the biggest competition in club football, I wonder why

I think we as fans, and the hierarchy at the club may well have to bite the bullet and accept that we don’t have a manager capable of winning this competition without a Messi in the side.

Personally, whilst disappointed at the probability of going out with a whimper again, I’m happy enough with the league and league cup this season. As I was when Pelligrini won it in his first season.

But if we want to be a European player we have to accept we are currently miles away with our thinking and our whole psychology as a team and a club.

At elite level we are a million miles away from competing. We’re a Seville or a Roma.

I’m not that bothered about Europe myself but I reckon the higher ups are. Yet more changes needed in the summer to get us to the level we are aiming at. We’re no closer now than we were shortly after the takeover.

What is shameful and frustrating is that Liverpool are nowhere near as good as we are but they were set up to win tonight. Pep was out-thought and out-tacticed yet again by Klopp on the big stage.

We’ve looked great against domestic opposition this year but we haven’t progressed on the big stage one iota.

Honestly couldnt have gone much worse. Cant believe how we always bottle playing them, they play the same every time and we never learn.
Exactly this. Fucking makes zero sense how we never learn. Us fans can see it yet the managers that are paid millions can’t . Just pisses me off.

Tactical failure completely and also players getting scared of the occasion. Pep didnt prepare well for this game its a huge mistake by him.

He went to the Anfield with City the 3rd time and his team got surprised by Liverpool the same way:

High pressing, agressive in your face type of pressing and attacks with pace, unreal workrate for second balls whch they end up winning all of them. And Klopp raied the bar today with immense defending, he made us having 0 shots of target. Klopp raped Guardiola today no better way to put it.

They had more desire.

And Guardiola starts to make his moves on this game? Like putting on Gundogan, start with a back three than change it back to a back four when its too late? Klopp played exactly what they did all season just higher level and we go and change stuff around put in 4 midfielders, use a back 3, Walker way too forward irst 30 mnutes on right side.

Really a shit performance from manager to all our players. Gundogan was shit decision tactically and he played bad all game but no way 6-7 other payers were any better than him.

Champions League is more than a bonus. It's the next priority after the league. Wigan was 10 men, and it's a one-off - an FA Cup which was low priority. This was the Champions League, and we've gone from being almost perfect, to a side which has come up seriously short tonight. Of course it takes the shine off the season. To say otherwise is just silly. massive disappointment. That does not mean it's not been a good season, but it's a blot on the copybook

Even if we'd have won tonight (or indeed if we still win the tie) there's every chance we'd get knocked out in the next round, given the calibre of teams likely to be in the semis. Of course it's a disappointment, as I said myself, but it's not taken the shine of a record breaking season for me. If it has for you then fair enough. You've always been a "glass half empty" man though, to be fair. Why accentuate the positives of a record breaking season when you can focus on the negatives?
