Liz Truss

I was listening to Andrew Marr yesterday. And although he started off with saying truss will be gone within weeks, he ended up realising that...

Conservatives know the next election is lost, its now about damage limitation.

They can't foist yet another pm (5 in 6 years) on the voters. They can't oust Truss.

They can't let Truss, inexperienced and clearly out of her depth carry on running the country into the ground.

Instead they will slowly move in the big hitters gove, hunt, raab, mourdent etc, names we "trust", underneath Truss to steady the ship, and hopefully cut the margin of loss at the next GE.

Seems sensible, seems most likely to me. Zombie PM to add to the hordes we've already had.
Even in that scenario, and he was also suggesting Hague and Osborne be parachuted in, Truss is so appalling in public that she would have to go. Irrespective of whether she had talented and trusted people below her doing their utmost, press conferences like yesterday’s would immediately undo their efforts and leave the markets twitchy and the international community scratching their heads in disbelief. A very Conservative coup is underway.

Hard to disagree with any of that, and there can be little chance of a trade dispute with the EU. Neither party would welcome that in the circumstance, and the mood on this side of La Manche is that the U.K. doesn’t appear to require any assistance when it comes to doing damage to itself.

Spending cuts will come, even if it ‘just‘ involves keeping budgets at their earlier/current levels and not raising them in line with inflation. Hunt was pressed on the defence pledge this morning and gave the impression that there will be cuts there, too.

I’m still not sure the general public fully understands how tough things are about to come, and the media’s continued omerta on Brexit does not help, but that’s for another thread.

Cut defence spending? With a war in Europe currently being fought? Where European countries are proposing a joint air defence shield to bolster security? Where are we in all of this if we cut back on an already hollowed out armed forces? And where would that leave the Defence Sec. Wallace?

You go back on one pledge and immediately you highlight the problems with doing so. The same with the NHS, education, social care. If we are trying to grow the economy then you have to invest in it. Maybe that is higher taxes or at least back to 20p tax rate, rather than 19p. Or back to the NIC rise, or borrowing to invest along with higher tax rates.

The irony of Brexit is that it requires higher state spending because we have to do a lot more than we used to. Previously, it wasn’t necessary or we sub-contracted out to the EU. We need more regulatory bodies, civil servants, administrators. We also demand better services, and public workers demand better pay, and it all needs paying for, which means tax rates at more European levels as well as growing the economy the best we can despite handicapping ourselves.

We have to finally face reality.

You're probably right, and she is truly appaling, i dread to think how she would be on the international stage.

But getting rid of her, bringing in another PM might just be the tipping point which means conservatives lose nearly all their seats now, rather than half in two years time.

Given the hours they work, the intense trauma they witness and the insane stress they go through, I'd say it's a poor wage. They absolutely should be on way more given the importance of their roles. I earned that wage just doing social media nonsense in a cushy office dicking about online all day for a brand. Absolutely stress free really. Feel embarrassed to be on the same as a nurse.

I never said they should be on a low wage, I just responded to what someone claimed was below an average wage.

She is a goner and good riddance. What a shambles of a party they have been over the last 6 YEARS. Went missing in the summer and then had the stupid leadership election circus followed by a few weeks of economics textbook policies which were clearly doomed from day one. She has caused absolute chaos on the already volatile bond markets and has forced countries and institutions to reevaluate the faith they have in us from an investment perspective. It really should go to the people now. Surely they can’t limp on like this for 18m. They will be like Hitler in the war, not accepting defeat and continuing to cause carnage before the inevitable end.
Fixed the first line.

I am a born-again pragmatist.

I think ideology and obsession with abstract nonsense have royally fucked this country. I remember when I was young and an ardent socialist, Tories used to say: 'Your ideas are all very well, but they would not work in the real world.'

Now I find myself saying the same thing to Tories. It's as if we swapped shirts at half-time.

Today I have been on Conservative Home, which is the big Tory site. Very interesting. One thing I learned (or rather had confirmed) is that not all Tories, even now, are nutters. Many want some sort of rapprochement with the EU. Some even say the UKIP clowns need kicking out so they can have a real Conservative Party again. It's really quite reassuring,

Grow the economy by manufacturing arms for the looming shitstorm
The arms trade is not good for the economy except within the trade itself. Capital intensive, so not that many employees per buck, and a lot of raw materials imported. The Dreadnought programme costs over a million pounds per job (direct at BAe and outsourced in the UK).

It's very poor VFM for the economy compared to spending on useful things.

There might be a growth industry in torches and pitchforks.
