Long Forgotten Testimonials

I remember going to Frank Worthington's vs Bolton and Andy Thorpe vs Stockport, 1990s ?...I've forgotten, forgive me but I remember going to that place early 80s for an England Vs Scotland game, a testimonial for some guy from the FL, Cliff Lloyd I think, the only thing I can recall is Bobby Charlton playing for Scotland.

Barnsley v City - Testimonial game for a Barnsley player who didn’t play for City?

May 1998 a few days after we were relegated at Stoke.

I went with half a mini bus of Leve Blues. We were the only City fans there in a very sparsely populated Oakwell. I think we lost which was no surprise.

I can’t find a record of it anywhere. I’ve searched the internet and archive copies of the Manchester Evening News. And nothing at all has turned up about the game.

Can anyone prove it actually happened?

@GaryJames - can you help with this one?

Did anyone else on here go?
I went to that. Even though it was in May it was bloody freezing !

Just been going through my list of programmes and went to a few testimonials, some already mentioned on here but can't remember much about most of them. Looking at the dates most of them were also pre -season friendlies.

Ryan Kidd Preston A 20.07.02 I knew Ryan from when he played for Radcliffe boys as a youngster.
John Ebrell Everton A 28.07.99
Roger Wylde Stockport A 31.07.99
Ian Brightwell Sunderland H 18.07.98
Paul Lake Utd H 05.10.97
Gary Fleming Barnsley A 07.05.97
Billy McAdams Barrow A 21.07.93 Saw Pete the badge at this one.
Ken Barnes Utd H 08.05.92
Andy Thorpe Stockport 09.08.91

I don't have a programme for the Freddie Hill testimonial at Bolton in 1989 which I went to and there was loads of trouble outside the ground before the game.

Strangely was discussing young players who never made it at the game yesterday and I remembered a lad who made his debut in a pre season friendly at Halifax about 2001. Same game when Eyal Berkovic debuted. Tall fella Viera like. Played a blinder and I thought he was the one but can't recall his name.

If we're talking about the same game then it was the day we signed Berkovic.
I remember it well because the lad who'd driven me to Halifax rang me with the news within a few minutes of dropping me off.

Are you thinking of Colosimo?
Big Aussie who made a few substitute appearances in 01-02.

I attended Bill Foulkes testimonial at Old Trafford in November 1970 when City beat United 3-0.
I don't remember anything about the game at all, but I do remember there was a lot of trouble as we walked back into town along Chester Road.
Windows being smashed as a big crew of us were escorted by the police (not GMP as they didn't exist then) ,and I'm pretty sure a police horse charged onto the pavement and scattered us all over the road.
It was my first taste of aggro at Derby games - I was shitting it and loving it at the same time.
And I managed to get safely home to Middleton unscathed.

No I'm sure he was a tall black lad. Dominated the game. Think we won 2-0. I remember being impressed with the new ground after last being there when they beat us in '80.

Found this n clarets mad but I’ve no recollection of Peter Swales being involved in a half time penalty shoot out!!

That season also saw him receive a testimonial from the club. It was a special night against Manchester City and all credit to their manager John Bond who insisted that Trevor Francis and Joe Corrigan, who had been on England duty in Spain the night before, turned up on their return and played.

They both played in the second half and when Bond himself came on for City there were cries from the Burnley fans for our manager Brian Miller to do likewise. Miller didn't let them down. The two managers had also taken part in a penalty shoot out at half time alongside their chairmen John Jackson and City's Peter Swailes. Bond's penalty technique proved to be the winner.
Respect for your memory pal;), being from Burnley I don’t remember any testimonials between us & burnley? Your user name always gets my attention!! fair few friendlys, remember falling asleep pissed in away longside early 90’s in a friendly lost 4-1 or 4-2 if I remember right?! , only time I’ve seen us loose at turf moor!!
