Could Shaw become the world's most expensive full-back? City set to break Alves' record and pay £30m for young Saint

Manchester City are ready to flex their financial muscle and pay a world-record £30million in January for Southampton’s outstanding young English prospect, Luke Shaw.

City have made it clear to Saints chairman Nicola Cortese they will pay the fee immediately to blow away rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, who also hold a long-standing interest in the left-back.

Shaw, 18, is regarded as England’s long-term successor to Ashley Cole and City accept they will have to break the world-record fee for a full-back to get him — beating the £29.5m paid by Barcelona for Dani Alves in 2008.

Shaw — and his club — have indicated he is happy to stay at St Mary’s until the summer. But City are primed and ready to beat any offer should he become available this month.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini is convinced Shaw is the long-term answer to his problem left-back position and will allow Aleksandr Kolarov to return to Italy should the youngster arrive.

With top-class English talent at a premium, City need to do everything they can to fill the quota of eight home-grown players in their Premier League squad.

Gareth Barry will leave at the end of the season after finishing his loan at Everton, while Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair have not earned regular selection.

Perfect for us. Homegrown is a big bonus.

Hard to believe we'd spend 30m for a left back in January though, with our needs elsewhere.

If the club see this as their best, and maybe only......opportunity to secure his signature then I can see the deal happening.

He is the future England full back and perfect for our play.

I'd say Clichy should go rather than Kolarov. Aleks has been better this season and offers so much going forward.

I know he's received an insane amount of hype, but does anyone know what he is supposed to be good at? Specifically? I've seen him look like he gets up and down the line quite well, at a decent pace and he put in a good cross against us, but what is it that's exceptional about him? I can't say I watch that much of Southampton

The article specifies that we'd move now to try and blow the competition out of the water.

It'll be a dogfight in summer, with Chelsea the favourites. If Chelsea weren't willing to buy him in January but City were, it could be City's best chance of getting him if they make Southampton "an offer they can't refuse". :)

I'm a bit skeptical about the story, but he fits the profile perfectly and City have been trying to identify young local players (<a class="postlink" href="http://thatkunaguero.wordpress.com/2013/12/06/exclusive-pellegrini-demands-more-brit-hits/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://thatkunaguero.wordpress.com/2013 ... brit-hits/</a>) who are good enough for the team... he's one of a tiny, tiny few who would be.

A very steep price for a player who is still cutting his teeth in the game. I am not convinced with this at all,

Which bit?

The suggestion we would be willing to pay that amount? or the question of whether he is worth it?
