Left back is one of the positions we don't need to be spending money on.

THIS

After Aleks (who could still develop) I see no world class cover. Clichy is too lightweight

How many other clubs have the quality at left back that we do?? Besides being a good player gael is homegrown.

How many teams have 2 world class players in every position? We have 2 very good left backs who don't need replacing.

The Red Devils trumped Chelsea in the race for the Southampton and England left-back after offering a five-year contract worth an astonishing £40 million overall

EXCLUSIVE
By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent

Luke Shaw has agreed personal terms in principle with Manchester United on a deal worth an astonishing £160,000-a-week, Goal can reveal.

The England defender, who does not turn 19 until July, will become the highest-paid teenager in world football when he completes his move from Southampton to Old Trafford.

9/2 Manchester United are 9/2 with Bet365 to win the 2014-15 Premier League titleGoal understands that Chelsea pulled out of the race to sign Shaw when they became aware of the £8 million-a-year, five-year contract offer that he had received from United.

Manager Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the 18-year-old and is in the market for a left-back after releasing Ashley Cole but the Blues felt that they had been priced out of a move for the Saints youngster.

United made a £27m bid for Shaw at the end of the recently completed domestic season and, although the offer was not accepted, the fee is not blocking the sale.

Southampton will not allow Shaw, Liverpool-bound Adam Lallana or any of their other players to leave St Mary's Stadium until a new manager is appointed.

Nevertheless, Shaw has made it clear to the Saints hierarchy that he wants to move to Old Trafford and there are not expected to be any hitches to him becoming a United player and being the first of a number of big-money United signings this summer.

The staggeringly lucrative deal handed to a teenager who will have to fight with Patrice Evra for a starting spot at Old Trafford next season under new boss Louis van Gaal is regarded as a huge statement of intent by United following their worst-ever Premier League season.

It demonstrates the lengths to which the Glazer family will go to capture Europe's best young players and restore United to a position of eminence both at home and abroad.

Shaw is a member of the England squad that starts their World Cup campaign against Italy on Saturday but he is expected to lose out to Leighton Baines for the left-back berth and start the competition on the substitutes' bench.

Shouldn't believe this but it's funny haha.

Rags wage bill is going to go through the roof if that wage quoted is real. Can you imagine other top class potential signings seeing Shrek on £300 k/week, RvP on £250k/week, 18 year old Shaw on £160k/week.

Every single potential class signing is going to want £200k/week or more, plus how many of their existing team are going to want to 're-negotiate' their contracts...........

TBF I don't believe the shite the media write about our wages so they are probably the same shite written about the Raggy's.

Just because the rags doesn't play CL they will have problem getting in the big names like they are linked to. They will have to pay huge sums to get someone in. It will end up with them buy Shaw and some dutch youngsters and they will end up 6th or 7th next season. With the rags struggling and Everton and above improve united will not keep up, If the do not pay 40m for players like Sanchez and 100m for Pogba, which is insane.

Luke Shaw looks like an excellent young player, but to pay north of £30m for a left back, and to pay him over £100k a week, when he's still a teenager, is just ridiculous money. The frustrating and hypocritical thing about it all is that no-one, anywhere, is looking at the money being mentioned, and criticising United for inflating the market or just simply paying far too much for a footballer. If you replaced United with City in this situation and the media coverage of this whole scenario would be hugely different.

Luke Shaw, the highest paid teenager in the world. Forgive me but.. Lolz.

Sure the boy has talent but its not like Shaw is a player who can win them games, get them titels or even complete their team... its too much money for one on that position.

Hope it works out as well as A&E and never again can they use the money argument against us

That's the annoying thing, they will continue, aided and abetted by the media, to use the money argument against us. You see, this is United's own money, earned through such footballing activities as having an "official Vietnamese pharmaceutical partner" as opposed to money coming into the club via a benevolent owner, so it's all perfectly ok. You know, in that way that United's money is mystically exempt from causing inflation in football........

You just gotta love when hypocrites and haters get their fair share against them aswell. Just love it, especially in the situation the rags are in.

This would be a truly bizarre signing imo.

Yes the kid's a good player but 30m and another 8m a season on top in wages for a left back?

Left backs simply aren't game changers or game winners.

£30m for a top striker or top midfield general I can understand, but a left back? He isn't even dead ball specialist that could bag them 10+ a season.

It's that bizarre I'd go as far as to say the story has to be bollocks.
