Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

OK i get that BUT why were MCFC more scared of Lyon than Lyon were scared of MCFC, and i dont mean that in a big headed way. City should of had more confident of their ability and try to force our style of play on them. By City changing style it gave Lyon the confidence oh look City are worried about us !
You clearly don't get that at all as you've just repeated the same thing I disagreed with the first time you said it. The change to three at the back was not because we were scared, it was because we needed 3 CB's to allow us to play out from the back as Lyon play with two strikers.

Two strikers vs two CB's = no numerical advantage to keep possession.

This is exactly how last night's team should have lined up. The three CB's was a necessity due to Lyon's two strikers, as it gives us a stable platform to build our attacks. However the pace and intensity would have been dramatically improved by the player selection and that's my only criticism of Pep last night. I understand exactly what he was trying to do but it didn't work and it's clear to see why with the benefit of hindsight, although most saw what was coming with the line up.
ctid, the last sentence raises an interesting point. Many posters were alarmed at the line up, yet Pep had full confidence in it. I wonder why he done this? He must have known that formation required a certain type of player/players yet selected a very iffy team. If it was a gamble, the signs were there early on it wasn't working yet he continued with it. I just can't tally up the formation and selection.

yet City were the 1st team to have 5 players score double figures in premier league history !

Im not saying we have a problem with scoring goals , im saying we are missing a Goretzka a powerhouse who can dominate the midfield.100 points season we didnt concede alot due to having a enforcer in midfield fernandinho was everywhere aggresive and won everything, we are missing that our defence would be better if they had better protection this season.

I think if he really wanted to go more secure he should have started Fernandinho and rodri screening the defence.

And that leaves Gundogan out and Bernardo or D. silva to start maybe bit deeper to pick up the ball.

This 3 man defence with gundo and Rodri was made just too easy to Lyon to block us out and we hardly attacked them until we started to push on around 60 minutes.

I think Lyon coach could not belive his luck when he sees the replay of the game that we decided not to really put them under pressure for an hour. Not forcing them to make saves, not forcing them to make errors.

Against Real we went an tried to press Varane made a mistakes.

Vs Lyon we were happy to pass it around without creating much, why it needed 60 minutes vs Arsenal and Lyon for us too start taking it seriously.

He isn't quite good enough for the very top level.

Can you imagine Aguero, Kane or Lewandowski missing that chance he had last night?
According to Jesus, he doesn't see himself as a central forward, but prefers to play on the left. Maybe there lies the problem.
