Doing something on purpose can still be a mistake. In their eyes they were doing nothing wrong but to most right minded people it was a terrible decisionIt was no ‘mistake’
They knew perfectly well what they were doing.
They are victims of their own selfishness and stupidity .

I personally wouldn’t class leaving 3 toddlers alone in a hotel room as a mistake!

I think most ‘mistakes’ must fall into this category. A conscious act that is wrong in hindsight. People make these sort of mistakes all the time.
