Madeleine McCann

Let me ask you this. If your kid asked you why didn't you come to see them when they were crying the night previous, would you leave them alone again?
Don't think I would

According to the police files it was two nights before and there was crying for over an hour. Whether you think she was abducted or met her fate in the apartment this should have been a warning to them, that they were either too far away or not doing checks regular enough.

"She also refers to the day of the 1st May 2007, when she was at home alone, at approximately 22.30 she heard a child cry, and that due the tone of the crying seemed to be a young child and not a baby of two years of age or younger. Apart from the crying that continued for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, and which got louder and more expressive, the child shouted ?Daddy, Daddy?, the witness had no doubt that the noise came from the floor below. At about 23.45, an hour and fifteen minutes after the crying began, she heard the parents arrive, she did not see them, but she heard the patio doors open, she was quite worried as the crying had gone on for more than an hour and had gradually got worse."

Insightful post, cheers

Yeah I've watched the docu boss, that was indeed appalling on behalf of the hotel.
However, it's still almost inconceivable to me as to why they didn't use the night crèche? They were happy to use the day crèche multiple times, it's something I can't wrap my head around

Well the collection times were a period of time after they were due to sleep, they didn’t want to disturb their sleeping patterns so decided on the option they did.

It seems such a ridiculous point now with what happened but they weren’t aware a calculated abduction was about to take place.

When we go away on holiday our children are central to it. They are involved fully in it, no kids clubs.... We want to spend every moment with them. I would never leave them alone, they would be there with us at all times. For a well educated couple as the McCann's it just doesn't compute why they felt that a meal with their mates was more important than the wellbeing of their children?

Security of my kids > disturbing their sleep patterns

Whenever I went on holiday with my mum and dad as a wee nipper it was exactly like you described, we weren't left alone; we were an integral part of the holiday
Then again I think I do have some great parents

But but but..... they deserve compassion and they didn’t know this was going to happen.

They were a pair of selfish cunts who brought the kids on holiday but couldn’t actually be arsed with them.

Bit don’t forget to be compassionate towards them though.

There is one way to ensure they get a good nights sleep.
I shouldn't have laughed at that
Absolutely in hindsight but my point is they thought the resort was very safe and the kids were very safe.
Perhaps I've just got a decent amount of common sense, but leaving your kids alone in a foreign country with your apartment unlocked, next to a road is just really, really stupid?

You're right, our holidays are for our children and family, they are central to it. I love the time away and uninterrupted time with them. Like you, I would never contemplate leaving them alone for a social....

In terms of criminal reporting - the area is one of the safest in Europe. The resort a particularly safe part of that and the specific area they were in was incredibly quiet.

We can sit here all night and word things differently by describing what happened.

As I say, I think many parents did this until the Maddie case and I reckon that if you and I were present at that dinner table, we’d have probably not thought there was danger.

Let's just remove the potential of kidnapping for a second.
Being next to a road where your steps go down to it, did it not enter their heads that Madeline could've fell down the steps and hurt herself? Or gone out onto the road to find them and have the risk of being hit by a car?
It's brainless on multiple levels

I’m not 100% but I’m fairly sure there was no traffic at that time of evening at all in the resort, plus the stairs to the road were through two sets of doors, one of which was visible from the dinner table anyway and the kid would have had to turn left to get onto the road once outside the door. The only exit directly in contact with the road was their window, that was shut and you couldn’t access the road without climbing even if it was open.

Look do I think it was perfect parenting? No...but no one is a perfect parent and kids are at risk many times when growing up- I don’t think they did anything wrong compared to what the average parent in these resorts would have done.

As I say hindsight would say they should have used the crèche and I’m sure they think about that every single day but I just think we should give them a break.

How they were treated was appalling by the media and the police.

There’s a hundred and one dangerous scenarios why you don’t leave children alone.
Pure selfishness .

I doubt they're reading BM, on a thread discussing the case I don't think it's unreasonable to bring up the case for neglect

You're right, the whole thing just doesn't sit right with me.... As a parent there are sacrifices to be made, but they aren't punishments, just adjustments.... I just would never leave my kids in an apartment on their own whilst I went out on a jolly! I don't understand why they did? As a loving dad I just don't get it??

Exactly, Madeleine was around 3 years of age. This is an age where the concept of danger doesn't really make sense to them, any number of things could happen to a child that age when left alone
