What's to say it was? How do we know (Lets say it was them for this) that it wasn't them and one other.

For example, one went to check the children, found Maddie dead and called over the McCann's without drawing concern from the others. It's a lot easier keeping a situation under control with less people knowing the full details.

I think what he's trying to say is that being in the profession they're in, they're perhaps more likely to hold it together if they had something to hide compared to someone who isn't in that line of work.

I honestly don't know what to think myself but for me there are enough unanswered questions and circumstantial evidence to arouse some kind of suspicion. There are plenty of things that haven't even been discussed either. For example, why did Kate McCann wash cuddle cat in the immediate aftermath? And what would the Portuguese police, incompetent as they appear to have been in this case, have to gain by trying to frame the McCanns? The more I look at the facts around this case, the more I discover that leads me to the conclusion that Kate McCann was responsible for her daughter's death.

Jane Tanner apparently did not tell them/the police about the man she saw carrying a child for 24 hours. She supposedly saw this man at 9:15 and Maddy was reported missing less than an hour later. Yet she didn't say anything for 24 hours. A couple of days later, she described the child as wearing pink pyjamas, the same as Maddy had been wearing and identifies the man as Robert Murat.

There are other holes in Tanner's story. She claimed she saw Gerry McCann and another man (Jeremy Wilkins, who he'd played tennis with) talking near the apartment but didn't speak to them and neither of them could remember seeing her. In addition, another witness saw the two men talking and didn't see Tanner. While the timeline is confused, there are witnesses who say Tanner never left the restaurant that night until the alarm was raised just after 10pm. Tanner's story is therefore quite palpably a complete fiction.

In a separate sighting the Smith family from Ireland saw a man carrying a child at 10pm. In their statement the child is described as having blonde hair to just over her shoulders and wearing pale coloured pyjamas. They describe the clothing of the man carrying her but can't see his face because he turns it away from them as they pass.

They are asked if they can identify the man as Robert Murat, chief suspect in the case, but categorically state that it wasn't him. I've already explained that they subsequently saw footage of Gerry McCann carrying one of the twins and believe he is the man they saw that night.
