Well he did play so that's a complete lie but whatever suits your agenda pal.

Maybe having to fight for his place, eventually earn it and then keep it is a far greater experience than anything he could be taught tactically or technically. Just look at Zabaleta, he hasn't ever been the best player in terms of ability but the drive, ambition and determination he has made him into one of the best right backs in world football for a good few years.

I watched maffeo against Celtic and he went hiding. No surprise to see him loaned out from me tbf. Shame as I thought he put in a decent and promising performance against united. Hopefully regular first team football will help the kid come on.
 
If our back 4 or 3 was a decent unit, then maybe one of the kids could have made himself invaluable for the 2nd part of the season, but seeing as we can't even trust our 50 mil 6 ft cb to be guaranteed a start in it, the chances of two little fullbacks getting many games in the 2nd half of the season, was becoming pretty remote.

I think Maffeo has a really good chance of getting back in & the experience he's had already, especially at the swamp, is a big thing. Hopefully he will get plenty of games in Spain & have another go at City in pre season.

Tbh, I don't think it would even be the worst thing for it to be repeated next season, if he couldn't hold down a place in City's first team. Half a season Pep coaching, couple of first team games, half a season regular football. That would be ok for most of the kids.

Tbf he didn't play fullback v Celtic. Angelino would have been a better choice imo.
 
I was just looking at Harry Kane's early career. 4 loan spells before becoming an instant success for Spurs at the age of 21. It appears that he did ok when on loan but nothing to suggest that he would make such an impact. 2 goals in 13 appearences during his final loan spell at Leicester.

It appears that it all clicked for him at the age of 21 when he reached physically maturity.

Perhaps thats how Pep sees Maffeo? A very talented youngster but not quite physically ready yet?

Possibly. But there is also the question of whether it's feasible to try & teach a kid to play in this back 4 when the veterans are all struggling to get it, & still challenge for the title at the same time.

What you are saying about Maffeo, could still possibly apply to Angelino imo. Maffeo is a natural defender, so has a great chance, but Angelino is a cracking footballer. When he's a bit older, he might turn into a bit more of a pitbull as a defender & suddenly it all comes together.

13 starts in a season isn't exactly great though.

The one thing I think these loans are doing is making them more mature by going out away from their comfort zones, but Angelino has gone to NY and Maffeo to Girona already.

I'm not against the idea of loaning both out either, I just really don't like where they've been sent. Both could have gotten starts in a prem team or a bundesliga team.

For me we're seeing the Denayer thing again. There was a window for him to be given a chance, but he was farmed out. By the time he got back, his window of opportunity was shut. I don't think he's turned out good enough, but the same approach probably won't help these two lads either. Thankfully Kelechi is playing in a position where you can't ignore his stats and he's had to be given some respect.

The big difference is, that both Angelino & Maffeo have been fully involved with the whole City setup & given games to go with the coaching. There appears to be a plan to test them & improve them, whether they make it or not. Denayer was just booted out.

If Denayer had the same, imo he would be twice the player he is now. But then perhaps it's not his ability which is being questioned. He looked a right lazy twat v the rags.

I don't agree with that. There wouldn't be a queue of Premier League or Bundesliga teams willing to take on some raw, completely unproven teenage full-backs for 6 months and play them regularly. And any team that was willing to do that would likely be desperate and involved in a relegation scrap. Not really great preparation for coming back to City in the summer.

Agree with this, the idea clubs are queuing up to give decent game time to our youth players is fantasy. They will always look to their own first. Picking a decent loan is very difficult as most will just end up being meat for the training ground.
 
they are still not ready for the PL at high level, it is clear when you see them player. Good experience abroad will be make or break,, of the two maffeo is the stronger but still a season or so away. Angelino needs more time and experience on loan to see if he can come to play at a higher level.
 
If the decision has been made that they need another loan the Girona is a much better option than the Championship or a lower Prem team. Just look at what has happened with Jack Byrne at Blackburn for evidence of that. We have to send the young players to teams we know will give them game time and right now we just don't have a club like that in England
 
I think this is a good thing long term but it does leave me a little concerned for this season, Sagna and Zabba have both had injury worries this season and i thing we are light at full back positions. I can't see us bringing anyone in so i guess Fernando is the back up.
 
How can giving them game time every week at a club challenging for promotion be seen as negative? They will be playing competitive football rather than going through the motions in the EDS.
The problem is not with the club but with the system. How can kids develop in a man's game? We need to put B teams in the league system.
