Manchester’s Changing Skyline

Like many people I was really excited when I first read about the Castlfield Viaduct becoming a High Line/Sky Park.

When I went on it I was a little underwhelmed. TBH there wasn’t much to see, and it was rather short. The views from it across the city centre were great.

Hopefully the proposed 2nd phase will make it a bit more exciting?

Place North West.

National Trust is seeking funding to progress with the second phase of its £25m project to transform the Manchester city centre bridge into a sky garden.

Place North West visited the attraction as it celebrated its first birthday to hear about plans for phase two of the bridge’s transformation.

Speaking to Place, Duncan Laird, head of urban at National Trust, described a “bigger, bolder vision” for the future of Castlefield Viaduct. Designs will work in parallel to phase one and see a one-kilometre extension to the green corridor.

Laird expanded upon this, highlighting the vision for the sky garden’s extension to connect Manchester’s Deansgate Castlefield area to Salford’s Pomona Island.

Landscape architect BDP has been appointed as the lead designer for phase two

I quite like what they've done with it, but agree that it could be better.
One key issue for me is the access up to it. The rickety lift at Castlefield is hardly ever in use, and although I've no issue ascending the adjacent stairs, it's not fit for purpose for those with mobility issues..
Let's hope the proposed extensions to Salford and Pomona incorporate accessible access.
From a completely selfish point of view, I'm looking forward to an aerial running route up there. The fantastic views will distract me from my runs!

Good article in the Sunday Times this past weekend ‘how business went mad for Manchester’

Plenty of businesses moving here from London it seems.

Our owners are getting credited with a lot of it, quite rightly so in my opinion, and devolved powers.
I'll try and find it out - might you have a link?

I do travel to a lot of our big cities with work occasionally and Manchester (outside of London) is several levels above them all, but good to see other's regenerating (competition and all that).

Still a lot of work to do on the place however.

Piccadilly gardens is an absolute embarrassment and why Whitworth Street (from Home to the Palace Theatre) is such slum mess at the moment is anyone's guess.

I got the paper copy but here it is ‘how business went mad for Manchester.’

Mentions other areas/cities too and how the West Midlands are dealing direct with India through their devolved powers. Not sure an MBacc is a good idea though!!

These incredible drone photos show the considerable progress being made by BAM UK & Ireland on Plot 9a at First Street in Manchester City Centre.

The current clear weather combined with the backdrop of the impressive Manchester skyline makes for an interesting aerial view of work so far.

Plot 9a is the next phase of development at First Street, a 130,900 sq ft Grade A office building which has been fully pre-let to the Government Property Agency (GPA) for their Manchester Hub bringing around 2,500 staff to work here.

Lost the source. Will find it again.

A bit dated, from April.

But, cracking pictures, nevertheless. (don't think I've posted them previously?)
