Manchester - A city built by immigrants.

During the next few hundred years that followed – and persisted until the Norman Conquest, the settlement of Manchester was in the territory of several different kingdoms. Evidence indicates that the areas to the north west of Manchester (such as Eccles and Chadderton) were British while the parts of Manchester (such as Clayton, Gorton and Moston) were Anglia, and the south west of Manchester was Danish (including Cheadle Hulme, Davyhulme Hulme and Levenshulme). We then became effectively French.
Geography's not your strong point is it? Chadderton's North East Manchester. Eccles is due West. Levenshulme is South East, as is Cheadle Hulme.

Anglia did not extend to anywhere near Manchester and as others have said we were never French. Also nobody was identified as British until the Middle Ages.

Other than that, very informative.

Great OP. I have always been proud of our great city and it's people. It shows a great maturity, that we accept and welcome migrants. All the great cities of the world have done the same. When Jewish people were being demonised, terrorised and driven out of their homes across Europe. This country and it's people welcomed them, apart from the fascists and right wingers. Now that people from across the Arab world are facing the same. We should offer the same welcome. The people against this are the racists and other right wingers. As the poster said, ' WELCOME TO MANCHESTER'.

Seems like many of us blues came from backgrounds outside the UK. Here's hoping this thread isn't pulled aswell.

It's a bit sad that so many people think the Normans were French.

An acceptable half truth used to illustrate geography.

Saying the Brigantes were Northern English for example tells you the areas they lived in though obviously not the country. Youd be surprised how people become irrationally angry at the suggestion that borders have always moved and national identity streching through history is bollocks.

I think its the way we are taught or something, like how many people will absolutely not accept that non Mercator projections are just as valid and often more useful maps. They 'think' in Mercator and many political ideas are wrapped up in this

Yea, this whole identity of "we're English, we're proud" and we've been Mancunian since the dawn of time is complete bollocks....

My Great Great Grandmother was an Irish settler in Manchester, eventually the council built Heywood as a Manc. Overspill and she moved there.

Her daughter met an American G.I stationed over here and my Grandfather was born.
He was The English as they come, proper into cricket, first went to Maine Road in 1947...

All the family are whiter than white Christians.

Then my Father met my Mother... She has Ancestral links with Spanish descendants.

I'm a complete mongrel but I can easily pass myself off as looking like some national front skinhead if I shaved my hair off.

It's not about where you're from... It's about where you're at.

I thought it was a good post.

IMHO, most Bluemooners will know that immigration has had a very big impact on the development of Manchester. Getting some extra info and insights is welcome and I have Irish, Scottish and English blood.

What can get a bit tiresome is the modern case for immigration tends to be over loaded on one side. For example, for every valid point that the NHS would collapse without immigrants there is an equally valid case that many NHS managers have failed miserably in growing our own workforces. It used to be an argument about bus conductors before the roles was largely made redundant.

I don't recognise the Burberry wearing bigots referred to earlier in the thread and if they exist they must be a very small minority of our support.
