Manchester City Skinheads

I'm almost certain that i knew this lad back in 1969, he used to hitch hike to all Citys away games, and tell us storìes of the scraps he got into at the matches... its 55 years ago, but his face still looks so familiar to me even now .....he tended to wear a long black coat, white skinners and 'bovver' boots at games ..... he used to hang around with us kids on the cobbled streets of late 1960s Bradford, Manchester, i was only about 10 or 11 years old back then, and he was quite a few years older ... we hung around, often playing football, on a little street that was only a couple of hundred yards or so from where the Etihad now stands.

I dont recall Les Tate or George McG being skin heads,Les had long hair.

I recall his mum degending him after he was arrested at some awsy match saying he only got nicked cos he had long hair.

Good scrapper.....i saw him take on 4/5 arse boys in the street outside Highbury in 1967

He was like a windmill, combine harvester & threshing machine, no one could get near him !!

He and the Sivori Blues were at the forefront of Citys early fighters in the early/mid 60s.

Good lads on their own,mad as fuck in a mob !!
George McGuire and his brother were bullying a young Railway worker in the Copenhagen in Newton Heath about 1983, One of the blacksmiths from the Railway depot went in early one afternoon, when the young lad arrived true to form the bullied him, P Shaw flattened the pair of them. He wasn't known as a fighter or a tough guy he told me "I just hate bullies" They stopped going in the Cope.
It'a always the quiet ones.

Some tough lads around Gorton in those days, I was a bit younger than those guys but knew their faces. Remember one my first away games getting in the Boothen End at Stoke - okay for for a while but it got very tasty by kick off and as the game progressed, George Maguire lamped a Stoke fan so hard he lifted him off his feet. Les Tate’s sister was a scrapper too, big Charlie Slaney as well with his rounders bat in a duffle bag ! Stan Hayes was another.
Stoke August 1967 -:

Went early with lads from Denton on the train from Stockport. Plenty of other City fans on the same train.

OB waiting in Stoke station laying down the law aour not going in the Boothen end or Victoria Pub.

Went to the Victoria whitch was packed inside and out with City fans.

1.30 prompt the pub empties and 150/200 good lads walk down to the Boothen with others joining en route.

In we go up to the back central spot behind the goals and eventualy there are hundreds up there and even more on the open end.

2.30 a big mob of jokies were in the street trying to get in and up the steps with City fans picking them off as they came through the turnstiles.

OB came in and forced the City fans away from the steps allowing jokies to get up.

City fans charged em and charges went backwards and forad with some proper close combat fighting.

Bottles and beer glass''s were thrown about but this was mainly hand to hand stuff.

OB seperated the two mobs and a 'no mans land' was created, with missiles now being the weapons of choice.

A big charge happened as City fans over ran OB and pilied into the jokies for more hand to hand boxing.

One of the Denton lads (PL) suddently pulled a baseball bat from up his jumper and landed it on any jokies in his way

His paremts owned a business in Denton and although we knew he could look after himself, wed never seen him in 'Wild Buffalo Bill' mode.

This schimozle went on all game, outside the ground and all the way to the station with hundreds charging each other in turn.

We we're 15/16.

City lost 3.0

We were Champions by the end of the season !!
