Manchester City vs Liverpool pre-match thread

It's often easy to forget the levels of intense high drama provided to us in the last four years in big games such as these. Domestically we have nearly always delivered on the big occasion. Big game players who excel on the biggest stage. It's why they're the best at what they do.

Liverpool have been great to watch this season and certainly have it their tank to win next week and do so by having a decent degree of control of the game. There is only one team, however, that is capable of turning up next week and completely controlling proceedings.

For a whole host of reasons I want next Sunday to rank alongside our truly great league performances in the last five years (which I would say were:united 0-3 this season; Spurs 5-1 the title season; united 1-0 when we won the league; Arsenal 6-3 this season)

Our midfield should have too much power for them imo.

Keep things tight for the first quarter of an hour and then start to prod and probe.

I'm going 2-0 to City.

if we play Demichelis in this game, City will be expose everytime. Saints attackers get through City defensive lines several times, imagine this with Liverpool. they have speed demons everywhere. playing high defensive lines with them, is like a suicide. hope Pelle will get his tactics right for this game.

MDM was excellent yesterday and was a close call for MOM!

I was going to say that. City's defence was superb yesterday. Soton had a lot of the ball, and Demichelis and Kompany won every challenge bar one

There was one incident in the 2nd half when MDM challenged for the ball, and it ran away just for a goal-kick

I criticised him a lot recently, and criticised Pellegrini for playing him, but in the last month he has been very very good. I bet Southampton targeted him and were hopeful of getting some joy at running him, but they got nothing out of him

Been really impressed with our defence the last couple of weeks, Komoany and Demichelis have been solid.

I think they will be tested by that cannibal Suarez when he transforms into beast mode, but I think our LB and RB might have to close in to deal with his and Sturridge's speed.

Predicting City 2-1

It's all about our defence against Liverpool. End of, really.

The team pretty much picks itself, certainly in all aspects that matter. We might play Kolarov instead of Clichy (i think we will play Clichy), and we might start Milner instead of Navas (i think we will start Navas). But none of that matters much.

We know we will play 4-5-1 with Silva in the middle behind the lone striker who will be Aguero. We know Hart, Zabaletta, Kompany, MDM, Fern, Yaya, Nasri, Silva, Aguero will start. We know we will get chances and very likely score against their average defence.

We know we will play our usual high line and Sterling, Sturridge and Suarez trying to get in behind. The only question in my mind is how will Kompany and MDM cope? The result is decided right there, for me.

+1000 .

Top post, i see it like that too.

Liverpool are lethal out of the blocks and then hit teams on the break with the pace they have at their disposal.

If we can contain them for the first half hour, I suspect Anfield will become nervy, this is their biggest game for six or seven years.

The past four times we've gone there they've controlled the game

I'm not one for seeing things swayed by referees but if Atkinson gets allocated this game we're fucked.

If anyone else watched the merseyside derby at Anfield this season they'll know exactly why i said the above.

I'm sure Arsenal were thinking of keeping it tight for the first 30 minutes when they went to Anfield. On the contrary I think we need to be quick out of the blocks like Spurs and United away. Impose ourselves early and make them doubt themselves.

True we are capable of opening with a blistering pace as well, as seen against Tottenham home and away and United.

If we take that approach it is critical that we don't leave ourselves open. Losing an early goal would be devastating and play right into their hands imo.

Can't wait for the match, what a boost it would give us if West Ham were to get something today.
