Manchester Low Emission Zone

Just to chuck one in the pot re car pollution....how about sorting the fucking roads AND Metro out both would reduce the shit in the air by having less cars per hour in the roads.....I've no figures but if it took 20 mins rather than 60 to get from A to B that's a big 'shit air saving'.
I mentioned that and got a lecture. I won't bore you with it.

See it's been referred back to the government for review.

I was out and about today and saw they had the signs up as you enter poynton. I always thought it fell under East Cheshire there but must be wrong. Just shows how big this low emission sone is, must be something like 40 sq miles?

I'm all for reducing emissions but seems ridiculous that on one hand they want to take money off people for this, when on the other they've been handling out money during the pandemic to keep the economy going.

Whilst there continues to be no reasonable alternative for those affected, it's grossly unfair. I know that the climate can't wait, but the damage that could be done here to people's livelihoods and mental health, the potential to cause huge shortages of services as people just walk away, has evidently been massively under thought an it just comes across as another money grab scheme.

Would love Manchester to be Britain's green transport capital, electric busses, less fumes, dedicated pedestrian and cycle lanes. But that would take money and commitment being diverted from the South. You can't underfund the north and then expect us to take another hit. If there was a definite scheme, a target to hit, then probably it would be bought into. Clean, prompt busses going from one place to another, reduced congestion, hell even bloody Spotify or audible freebies as incentives for using public transport - take a ride and listen to a book or album free for a week... But there isn't, it's give us your money to use your vehicles, or risk your time, health and even livelihoods with our shite transport network.

Until then, this should be shelved.

Apparently it's 494 sq miles.

I'm confused as to what the real goal is, Burnham said the pollution levels were measured in 2015, since then I would say the amount of electric and hybrids on the road both cars and commercial has increased incredibly since then so it would be interesting to know why the air quality hasn't been given a goal, ultimately its just a tax against working people

Your last line says it all, a tax on working people.
Another tax on working people.

Yes -and that’s all it is -this Climate “Crisis” Agenda is all about that-turning the clock back to when us Working Class Oik’s knew our place

Course it is all those scientists protesters governments made up the climate crisis to put working class folks in their place, making working class folks poor helps the rich

The bit i don't get is they say the daily charge is to encourage people to update their vehicle to a newer cleaner model.
This must be right as i'm sure people drive round in an old diesel just for the fun of it rather than the simple fact they cannot afford a new shiny one in the first place.

People who can afford a new van/car don't pay a penny, so this is just a tax on the poorer?

I've read they are saying businesses can simply pass on the charge to their customers.
Now call me cynical, but i can assure you that if charging a customer a penny more was possible, then they would all ready be doing it!

Additionally, even announcing this scheme will reduce the trade in value of any vehicle that doesn't meet Euro 6, making upgrading even costlier.
This at a time when new vehicles are harder to source and have nearly doubled in price since Covid struck.

Finally, this will only be the beginning. Once the cameras are all up and running, private cars will be next.
You only have to look at London to see where it will go. Khan has just announce a new charge where all journeys in all cars/vans will be charged...per mile. Even low emission vehicles will be included.
So all those updating vehicles now will just be delaying massive charges for a few years.

I understand we have to do something in the future. But this scheme is just too soon.
