Manchester Low Emission Zone

Im only repeating this so ill stand corrected if its not right but …

i believe milan have really cut pollution by having alternate days when you can drive into the centre, odds and even number plate endings. So if u drive an odd on an even day you get a fine. Its totally encouraged car sharing.
also only certain days when non perishable goods can be delivered.

so if it wasnt a tax that burnham has implemented and was all about pollution .. then why not bring in something like this?

but we know it is about the money.
its a stelth congestion fee and has been on the cards since the vote failed.

i'm not totally against it btw, the roads cant cope as it is but the public transport infrastructure is shite and very overpriced compared to other european cities. manchester falls way behind the mark in this respect.

this will be another hurdle employers will face getting staff back into offices in the city.

But dedicated bus lanes cure that. No cabs no motorcycles just buses and pushbikes and the buses go through - bus stops in layby's so a stationary bus doesn't cause an obstruction

And how do you retrofit older built-up suburban areas for that without causing huge jams and causing political pushback?

I just think that there has to be a viable, cheap alternative to driving before you can put in a charge zone. I can drive into town, park for 3-4 hours and drive home cheaper than I can get a family metro ticket to get on a packed tram with the increasing chance of bumping into some loon. Many more buses that are free or really cheap with a decent longer term strategy on the tram network, many more cycle lanes, cheap electric cars etc. After all it's not just the drivers/companies that will be impacted, it's everyone that buys something that gets transported into the zone.

There's the rub but its now coming down to the wire and about commitment - you have to decide does a road in Longsight lose half its footpath to allow for a bus layby or have single file traffic down Ashton Old Road to allow for a bus lane whilst other countries build airports and gas fired power stations. If we are only going to sell EV's in 8 years time will we have the charging infrastructure in place ( spoiler - will we eckers like ) - are we all going to eat plant based food that means loads of rain forest is cleared to allow for increased production of soya beans?

I don't know the answer its above my paygrade but if people think the words that have been spoken have fixed it then they are in for a shock - my advice is dig a bore hole in the back garden and secure yourself a water supply and invest in sun block cream producers

Well what an expensive fuck up this has all been.
it was never workable. It was never fair.
why burnham ever thought it was is incomprehensible.

and hes still blaming others #scouser
Has it been scrapped ?

Edit: sounds like it soon will be. So all the money installing signs and IT wasted, ah well.

Id imagine itll come back in some form or other but for now its shelved. MILLIONS spent on cameras and signs.
I’d guess the cameras and IT resources will be reassigned to law/traffic enforcement , if it does get scrapped.

if it doesn’t get scrapped, i can see a hefty turnover in maliciously damaged cameras as people ‘protect’ their area from the charge
