Personally, I hope Joe gets the chance to properly prove himself this season, starting the season as first choice. If he does, I am pretty confident that he can prove himself to Pep just as he proved himself to Pellegrini who seemed similarly unconvinced by him when he arrived IMO. In terms of pure goal keeping, from what I have seen of Ter Stegen, Joe is considerably better. I actually think Joe has the basic tools in terms of touch and passing to improve his distribution significantly with the right direction from Pep. I'd also expect having a new manager with a new defensive system to give Joe the confidence to start catching the ball again rather than the nasty habit of punching absolutely everything that has crept into his game over the last year or so. Joe had a good season last season in terms of shot stopping but I think it is easy to assume that the lack of confidence that seemed to affect much of the squad last season didn't also have an effect on Joe and influence some of his decision making. If he doesn't prove himself, fair enough, but it will seem absurd to me if he doesn't at least get the chance.
