You seem to want joe to fail,he hasn't kicked a ball under pep yet
Karen, I would say there is no real City fan that doesn't love Joe. He pretty much has been our keeper the whole time. And everybody would want him to succeed. But certain players only fit certain system. Once we bring in Pep, we have to fit into his system, and not be the other way around where Pep fits Joe's system.

What exactly did you think was "bang on the money"
At the start he says that "Some posts on here are comical" which is true. Many a time I've had a chuckle at something I've read on here.

Not on this thread granted, but yeah, that bit was correct.

Some of the posts on here are comical lol .......no one on here knows much more than fuck all about Stegen since he's spent the last 2 years sat on his arse polishing the bench..... behind an average keeper in his 30's who was a nobody before having a couple of good games in the WC2014.
All the 'peps system' nonsense is just as funny..... his keepers get nearly as few touches in a season as Richard Wright did, you'd think they were Franco Baressi going by some posts.
Mate just because you don't know about him, let's not assume that everyone also don't know about him.

All i'm saying is wait for a while before writing off joe,pep says he is here to learn,he will adapt to win games and his exact way of playing might take a while to kick in,i do expect us to be tighter from the off though

Only had to watch 3 mins of that to see how confident he is with the ball at his feet, very impressive.

I wasn't going to comment on the video because I only watched 3 mins of it myself.
Other than the 2 occasions when he chested the ball down and played it straight out to a defender (which was quite impressive).
What else did you see other that short, simple passes out to a defender?
And before anyone else jumps down my throat, I'm just asking Rammy what he saw.

Basically you're just saying Pep will abandon his system of building up from the back, which is what he's been doing all his career, because Joe can't pass? I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.

The biggest mistake people have here with Joe is that they have huge sentimental value on him. He's as close as we have to the City guy. And this prevents some people from seeing him objectively.

Let me put it this way, if Joe just came in last season, and there's news that we would get Ter Stegen, everybody would be jumping for joy.

That's the thing. Not every keeper can pass the ball simply like that. They don't have the composure to do so, cause truth be told making those passes isn't that hard. A kid could do it. But when somebody is closing in on you, do you have the nerves to execute the pass?

I saw a guy who was cool as a cucumber under pressure, fantastic control, capable of using both feet, ran quickly to make space for the return ball, never hoofed it at all.

I didn't say he would abandon it but adapt a bit to win some games whilst changing things to his way,no.one knows how any of them joe included is going to adapt,it's not that outrageous a position to take,we are going around in circles so lets leave it and see what happens

I have heard a great deal about how good he is with the ball at his feet........but is he as good as Joe as a keeper ?

He's quite good. Joe has weaknesses besides his distribution so let's not act like the rest of his game is World Class (to his left, command of his area).

Ter Stegen is strong with shot blocking, but supposedly vulnerable to long shots.

He's not going to be such a downgrade that it will be a problem, as his strengths with the ball at his feet are unmatched and would put Pep's ideas into full action. We're probably not getting him, although Bravo seems like a possible short term solution.

To be honest I'm not sure it matters that much.

The way to think about it in my opinion is like this - ter Stegen in goal would allow us to push the defence even further forward. That compresses the pitch and makes our pressing more effective, which means snuffing out a lot of attacks before they develop. It also means the opposition forwards are further from the goal and it means we'll be much better at holding onto possession and keeping the ball is the best form of defence. Compressing the pitch more also means shorter distances for our players to run when they press, which means they can maintain a higher intensity for longer.

So even if his being a slightly worse shot stopper costs us a goal or 2 that Joe would have saved, the tactical changes it would allow us to make would likely save many more.

On top of that, you've got his contribution to the attack. If we had him in between the sticks, he would be a genuine passing option when playing it out from the back which gives you a man overlap somewhere and that free player will create goals when the ball is worked to him.

The "good with his feet" thing really cannot be overstated in terms of importance.

Indeed, this.

It is impossible to build from the back if the keeper can't do it. But I agree let's just wait and see how it unfolds. I would be happy to be proven wrong however and hope that Joe can adapt.

He's the best in the world with the ball at his feet.

Can't see us getting him tho.

I love Hart but we have Pep and if he wants a new GK I'm fine to go along with it. Would rather not hold his plans back after chasing him for so long.

It doesn't matter if he's not quite as good a shot stopper, his ability with the ball at his feet will allow us to play in a way which will save many more goals than we lose because he's not as good a shot stopper.

Keeper like ter Stegen means it's easier to keep possession. Possession is the best way to keep clean sheets

Keeper like ter Stegen = higher defensive line, which means more compressed pitch, which means if we do lose the ball, our outfield players are closer together, they can press more effectively, and because they are covering shorter distances they can press with more intensity for longer.

More numbers higher up the pitch also means we can stop counterattacks more easily, and a goalkeeper who's confident enough to run 30 yards out of his box to sweep up a hopeful long ball over the top allows us to get possession back in their half quicker which means the other team can't get out.

In attack, having an extra player actually capable of being in the passing triangles under pressure means we have a man advantage and that translates into one of our attackers being free and that leads to goals.

In short, ter Stegen would have to be absolutely miles worse than Hart at the traditional goalkeeping stuff for swapping the two to be make the team worse, because the way we would be able to play with ter Stegen in goal would save us loads of goals, and let us cut out opportunities before he even got involved.

And honestly the gap is not so great. In fact a lot of the errors ter Stegen makes could be attributed to his playing situation - he only plays every fortnight in the cup comps, which is no way to be as a keeper, anyone would make more mistakes in that situation.

If there is an argument for keeping Hart number 1 then it should not be made about his ability as a keeper, it should be to do with his position as a leader in the team and at the club, the fact he's a proper City player who loves the club and has been here a decade, which is the kind of player we need around and the fact he's English and pep is supposed to want an English core.

But even optimistic Hart fans must be hoping he can improve his ability on the ball over 6-12 months of training with Pep - anyone who thinks he's gonna be able to don't straight away is delusional ("he just needs more options!") or hasn't watched him for the last 6 years in our goal.

Meanwhile if we don't bring in another keeper, pep will have to put his plans on hold. Because we can't play the way Pep wants until we have a keeper who can sweep and is as comfortable with the ball as an outfield player.

Exceptional post.
