Yo Alan, firstly, many thanks for the many intriguing and sometimes affable but blunt posts that you’ve educated and amused me with, down the years - all much appreciated.

I think that you’re missing the point that Cancelo is a left back (plays as a left back) but has played right back an awful lot so is also (and maybe originally) a right back.

Football players are players of football, they rock up at a club and the manager says play here or play there and they play in those positions and other positions as may be required.
They aren’t contractually committed to play a specific roll, they’re both expected and allowed to play in any number of positions and to be recognised as being players in the positions that they play in y’know?
Football’s a team game so it’s not about elevating an individual player by facilitating that players highest level of individual performance, it‘s about tuning the instrument to get the best tune out of it.

PS. I’ve just reread your post and no, you didn’t miss a whisker.
Please forgive my clumsy response.
No worries, I’m with you 100%, especially the bolder bit.

Alan Shearer failed his Newcastle trials as a kid as they put him in goal. Fortunately, he wasn’t labelled as a keeper all his career and scored a few goals.

They can point out what they want. Back then transfer fees were inflated, plus both of those players were proven internationals. As we sold Zinchenko for 32 million we sort of get him for 20 million so I'm not sure why we stalled but it is what it is. He's under contract at Brighton they can ask what they like, obviously they'll get the highest fee possible. In future perhaps agents and players will stick a release clause in before they sign the contract after this saga.

Anyone get the feeling Chelsea are just trying to piss us off ? Making big splashes by specifically targeting our own players plus anyone we show an interest in ? It seems like a tactic to me by the new owners

To be fair to Brighton the price for FB's under contract has been around £50m for a few years now. Us with Walker, Mendy, Cancelo, Chelsea with Chilwell, United similar with AWB.

If £40m was our ceiling I'm surprised if we thought we had a chance.

We tried to put pressure on them thought with the player pushing it would do the trick but full credit to be into they weren’t to be bullied and now Chelsea will pay their asking price.

Dont like how we went about this transfer personally in the same way I don’t like how Barcelona do business.
You don’t like that we put in bids for a player at the prices we think he’s worth and then walking away when the selling club won’t compromise because they see City and the pound signs?
