Marseille (a) post match thread

Excellent performance, only thing that could have made it better would have been getting the second before half time, but let's not forget this is a team who have competed with Lyon and PSG and done pretty well. They could have hurt us do we'd let their counter attack game play out.

Walker was again immense, De Bruyne ran the show, Foden energetic and always on the move. Torres made some good runs too in a position he probably didn't expect to play and showed he's a good finisher.

But he most pleasing part for me was Dias. There was a passage of play when they had a real go and I felt the fears of an easy goal coming on, and then Ruben locked the door several times in one passage of play. It deflated them for a period and allowed us to get back in control. Excellent.

Cole Palmer seems like he could play anywhere and play there well. Just wish Delap had been available too.

Oh, and no injuries!

The pace the ball was played at was noticeably faster last night and our press just so much better and more consistent. I think those two factors explain the difference. Oh and Kev. Back to his best last night. I thought everyone had a decent game with no weakness in any area. Marseille were pretty poor though. They didn't contest the midfield and it was noticeable that Rodri in particular was given so much more space to operate than in recent games. Whatever though, he was very effective last night. Nice to see us score a tap in for the 3rd, to me that is when you know when we are playing well. Phil and Kevin are some midfield.

Don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but it felt like we turned a corner last night.
Aye, I hope Pep uses a system as close to that one again on Saturday, he could maybe swap Torres and Raz, or even put FFS on the left if he wants to rotate but we must use the same template with the wingers on the “correct” wing.

Already? The guy has been here for years. Its not like he rocked up 6 weeks ago and is struggling to adapt but is now finding his feet. He does ok against a turd Marseille side and all of a sudden, everyone on here thinks we are ok in that position. We have watched David Silva there for a decade, that is the level we want/need. Gundogan is no good at 8, I don't know how many times people need to see him struggle there, before just accepting it.
He’s played well the last few games, all that matters is the present. Or we can just ignore that and go off what he’s done in the past. You criticise him in a game he played well in. Makes no sense.

Great win, we need to sort out 1st place in group as soon as possible and then play rotated team in last 2-3 games.

We need same energy, speed, passing against Sheffield U. on Saturday. Very early game we need to be ready.

For me even the starting line up can be the same, I prefer Mahrez from bench not in starting 11.

KDB is the MoTM for me. He was directly involved in two goals. Although one could say that he's not yet at his best, we're still miles better when he's in the squad. Anyone else felt a tinge of panic every time he grasps his leg? The ref did nothing to protect him beyond a yellow when it was already too late. Terrible officiating.

Foden and Star-Boy were lively and fun to watch. I hope they get the nod over Mahrez for more matches. Did not expect Pep to play Ferran as false 9 but he did well enough for a goal.

The Dias-Laporte partnership looked steady and assured. Hope it holds up against better opposition. I do hope they start looking for attacking chances from deep because we sure as hell won't be getting them from Rodri.

Gundogan usually makes the right decisions and is in the right place most of the time. But he's simply limited physically and it can be frustrating to watch. Nice goal though.

Walker has been key to our defense. If only we had another one of him in the left side, we'd be impenetrable.
